What is the pros and cons of using a recumbent exercise bike over a atationary exercise bike?

waverly500

Answer
recumbent bike: more comfort, better for your spine and posture.
the other kind (cause they're both stationary anyway): it might help you burn more calories since you are still using the other muscles to keep you upright.

I personally like recumbent bikes better. The extra comfort helps me ride more and eventually offsets whatever extra calorie-burn benefit of that other kind of stationary bike.

What are the pros and cons of upright vs recumbent exercise bikes?

estrellast

Does one burn more calories than the other? Any other advantages or disadvantages that you know of?

Thanks!

Answer
I prefer recumbent due to lowerback safety.

weight loss/workout question..?

Loves to s

soo I'm female, about 5'5 and 140lbs.
I'm trying to lose about 10 lbs, and I'm going to the gym regularly. i aim for like 5-6 days a week.
my routine consists of:
going on the stationary bike for about 30 min, burning 200 cal
running on the treadmill for another 30 min burning 300 cal
then i lift some weights..a mixture of dumbbells and machines. then about 200 crunches.
i do the eliptical for an hour burning 500 cal..
then the same weights and crunches one last time.

so i have a mixture of cardio and weight lifting.
but the thing is some one told me my routine won't cause me to lose any weight....

i know that i have to eat less calories than i burn in order to lose weight. but was my friend right when he said i won't lose weight this way?

any thoughts, suggestions for a sufficient weight loss routine would be great... i can't afford a personal trainer.

It is good that you have sought the help of Yoga to bring your body back into shape. While your practices and measure to eliminate excess weight or what you do is important, what you shouldnât do is just as important.

Yogic Diet

This is very important, if you wish to get back into shape and develop a healthy, slim and shapely physique. Let your diet be Yogic and Sattvic (pure, light and predominantly vegetarian). This means plenty of raw foods â salads, sprouts and seasonal fruit â vegetable juices, dried fruits and loads of water.

Avoid potatoes, peas, chick peas, grams, peanuts, all non-veg fare, fried, fatty and spicy foods, junk / fast foods, packaged foodstuffs and confectionary products. Also keep away from milk and milk products such as cheeses and butter. But you may have plenty of diluted buttermilk prepared from skimmed milk. Avoid snacking between meals and, as mentioned before, never skip a meal.

weight loss?

chris (alt

im not rele trying to loss alot of weight jus sum extra fat that ive gotten since bein in lock up and stuck at home unable to do any real physical activity. Im doing it to look better for my gurl that im seein in two weeks

Answer
This is my theory and this is what works for me. Everyone is different so it may need to be adjusted to your own personal needs.

Energy In/Energy Out

Food Intake: 1,200 Per Day

One Pound equals 3,500 Calories

To loose one pound per day, You need to burn your food intake plus your one pound of fat

1,200 (intake) + 3,500 (Outtake) = 4,700 Calories Burn

You must burn at least 4,700 Calories everyday to loose one pound at least. It is very easy to go up and beyond 4,700 calories each day.

Best way to do this is to track your progress on a calorie counter monitor watch. If you do it by the numbers you can loose the weight. It is just a matter of changing the way you think about weight loss.

Once you start wearing your calorie counter you can see the numbers increase and you fill find yourself doing extra things in your day, like tapping your foot while waiting at the light in your car, chewing gum, singing out loud and so on onto of your workout routines. You begin to see that everything you do in your day contributes to the overall numbers needed to loose that pound.

I, myself, have done this recently. Two weeks later, I lost one pant size and 10 pounds. And that is just my current progress. I have used this method previously after childbirth and have gone from 168 to 127 pounds with in two months.

I personally burn 1,000 calories by Walking in my community for one hour in the morning and I also burn 1,000 calories by simply using a stationary bike while playing xbox. I get so involved in playing xbox that I completely forget I am pedaling or working out. Think about it..How many hours have you spent playing video games..why not burn calories while you are doing it.

Water Intake/Less Storage

Most people do not get enough water in their system. Water is your body's principal chemical component, comprising, on average, 60 to 80 percent of your weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. To determine if you are getting enough water use this simple formula.. Take your weight, for example 150 pounds and divide by 2. Take your answer which is 75 lbs and change it to ounces, in this case 75 ounces. That is how many ounces of water you need a day. Your body performs mostly on water. If you make sure you get enough water everyday your body will perform at top notch and your body will no longer have the cravings of junk food. You will have a better performing body system to help you work out and feel better thru out your day.

____

Good Food

My favorite things to eat:

Avocado Wraps

Simple: Low Carb Tortilla, Half Avocado sliced, alpha sprouts, lettuce, soy bacon...Just wrap it up and eat. You can vary the things you put inside so long as you keep it to approx 4 or 5 items. You want to make sure they are fresh, low calorie and filling. Avocado and mushrooms can replace meats in your meal and still have great taste.

Special K Cereals are fantastic. They have that sweetness that one craves and is so good for you. Calories are low. Great for even just dinner.

First thing in the morning...A Glass of Chocolate Milk. Yup!! Chocolate Milk. We all crave that "got to have" item in the morning. Milk is the best thing you can have for yourself while working out. The chocolate (and you can use Carnation Instant Milk for this but I simply use Nestle dry mix) will give you that sweet "snack" that you need. If you give your body a little bit of it and its in a control way, you will not crave sweets and junk the rest of the day.

Lean Cuisines

Fantastic food! Each meal is approx 180 t0 380 calories per box. So think about your calories. 1,200...You can still have several of these meals a day and still be under your intake requirements.

Itâs all about the numbers and watching what you take in and what you burn out. And you know what..If you go over your 1,200 mark for food intake...thatâs okay...you simple up your total calories burned for the day by what you took it. So long as you burn off the over all calories to be more than your food intake. Just make sure you stick too it so you can reach your weight loss goals.

Fruits and Veggies

All you want on the schedule listed below.
Bananas are my favorite. They are very filling and can make a meal all on their own.

____

Vitamins

My favorite is ONE A DAY WITH ENERGY...I am in love with this vitamin because I am just like everyone else who loves those quick fix energy drinks. But what people do not realize is that energy drinks can contain 120 to 440 calories in just ONE Can. If you think about it..That is HALF of your allowed calories for food intake. The best alternative I have found is One a day with energy vitamin. Easy to spot, it is packaged in a green label bottle. Just One vitamin a day will give you as much energy as approx. 1 1/2 cans of red bull...WITHOUT the calorie intake.
WoW..now your making progress already because you have made more room in your intake calories for actual healthy food.

_____

Soda/Carbonation

Carbonation is terrible for your system because it bloats your stomach. And when your stomach bloats, your jeans just don't fit. You can drop one pant size simply by NOT drinking any carbonated drinks all together..Take away the bloat and you have instantly just made it one pant size lower. Besides, Sodas dehydrate you and with that One a Day Vitamin, you won't need the Caffeine in the soda and it will also cut out those extra calories that you don't need.
So remove that soda and the energy drinks and just think how much calories you just instantly removed from your daily intake. I normally consume what...four sodas and two energy drinks in one day...that is a total of .... 900 calories. Of what??? Nothing...Those are horrible calories and calories that can be replaced by food which will fuel your body for your day and your workouts.

____

Your Body

Your body is like a computer. You must program your body to do what it is suppose to do so it won't crash and leave you with a virus. Your stomach is only the size of your fist. So think about it right now, Look at your hand and close your fist. Not very big is it. That is how much food you actually ONLY need to eat, each time you eat for every meal. If you eat anything more than that, you will stretch out your stomach which causes overeating and overweight.

What you need to do is eat every three hours, approx 5 to 7 times everyday around the same time. If you are always giving your body healthy and better food choices (the size of your fist) every three hours, your body will know you are giving it food. It will use that food properly. It will not go into starvation mode or store food away for later because it knows...it will get more in three hours. So what does your body do...it flushes everything out of your system because it doesn't need it.. Now it knows...you wont' forget about it and that food is on its way.

____

Walking Buddy

This is the best thing especially for woman. Get a walking buddy. One hour everyday. Just think about how much talking, venting and laughing two woman can do together while walking and yup, you guessed it...it just burns more calories and reduces your stress. You now are more relaxed because you can talk and free yourself of whatever is frustrating you while getting into shape.

What cardio exercise should I focus on with my weight?

Booey

I'm 230, 5'10". I've read that running's impact on feet and ankles could lead to an injury cause I'm a tad big. Should I do cycling? Perhaps a stationary bike? I'm looking to join a YMCA so I can get my weight down.

Answer
Walking and swimming are good places to start. You can assess where you are and move to more demanding exercises as you are able. Here are some ideas on how to improve fitness.

First, for all of the "quick and easy" weight loss diet pill suggestions, remember, if something sounds too good to be true... it probably is, particularly if you have to pay for it.

On Yahoo!Answers I find certain questions being asked repeatedly which is simply a reflection of new people participating. A couple of common questions amount to "How do I lose weight," or more specifically, "How do I lose abdominal fat?" I have gotten very positive responses from my answers when I paused to reply (and now beginning to get "It works!" emails that are very gratifying. I like helping people)... so have recently decided to put a good solid answer on my Yahoo!360 Blog (September 10) that I can point people to. These are my thoughts as a physician and athlete.

Don't target losing more than about 2 lbs per week. If you try to lose faster, your body will go into "starvation mode" and get very stingy about burning calories while at the same time very efficient about storing any calories that you do provide. And it will make you feel awful.

There is no site specific way of losing fat... the old myth about working your abs to burn belly fat isn't true. To get rid of love handles, you need to lose overall fat. That happens with exercise and watching your diet. More on that below.

The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into a fat-burning mode.

Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest. Be aware that skeletal muscle weighs more, so with this approach you may see your weight increasing while your body fat is melting away. Not realizing this often stresses folks who think they should be losing weight as a measure of fitness. Forget the scale, look in the mirror and you will be happy.

To lose a pound of fat, you need to eliminate about 3500 calories. You can do this by burning more with exercise or by modifying your diet to reduce intake. If you do a Google search on say, "swimming calories" you will quickly find a website with tables of calories burned for a given exercise. You can use such lists to estimate how many calories you are burning up with your routine.

For diet, keep a diary for a couple of weeks counting calories, grams of protein, and grams of fat intake. It is easy with online sources of nutritional information (type the name of the food and calories into the Google search engine) and packaging labels. That will let you quickly figure out where the fat is coming from in your diet.

Fat gives you 9 calories per gram. So take the number of grams of fat, multiply by 9, then calculate what percentage the fat calories are of your total daily calories. Restricting the calories from fat to about 20% of your total intake is ideal for a maintenance diet... that isn't overly restrictive. Of note, you need some fat in your diet. For instance, the body uses fat to produce hormones. Once you have a picture of how to modify your diet, you can drop the diary and just go back to it occasionally if you are wanting to tweek things further.

There is a subset of questions that goes further and asks about "How to get a six-pack?" The answer is the same. Six-packs are 20% abdominal exercise and 80% diet. There is one caveat... abdominal muscles will form in the position that you work them, so be certain to pull them tightly toward your spine while doing crunches, etc. Also, during most lifting, the "core is active" which means that you should be stabilizing with contracted abs then too. Fail to do this and the abs will form, but bulging outward and the result is not attractive.

If you are trying to build muscle as a way to lose fat, then you may need to increase total calories and specifically your protein intake. I target about 0.8 g of protein per pound of body weight each day when actively building. That is far more protein than most people need in their diets.

Wal-Mart mountain bikes?

Jessie

I keep hearing repeatedly that one should stay as far away from Wal-Mart as possible when buying a bike because it will be nothing but a piece of junk. What I want to know is, what is so horrible about them?

I ask because I don't have much to spend. Under no circumstances will I ever race. Nor will I actually bike on mountains or super rocky terrain. I just want a bike that is okay to ride on unpaved surfaces in case the opportunity ever comes up to ride off-road...but any trail I tackle is going to be pretty tame. There are no actual mountains around here.

So, if I just want a bike for a fun way to enjoy the outdoors and get a little exercise, why is a $200 Wal-Mart bike so aweful? They are not too heavy...aluminum. Why does everyone keep telling me that it is a complete waste of money and I have to go spend $400 (minimum) at a specialized bike shop? I mean, I'm not looking to go pro afterall....just fun.

Answer
Reasons to avoid a wal-mart or target bike.
1.) they are alot heavier than decent bikes
2.) this is probably the biggest one. They are not assembled or inspected by a bike tech. They are assembled in mass by someone trying to slap as many together per hour as possible to make their boss happy. They are the same minimum wage workers who clean up the bathroom or fold t-shirts. They have no proper training for truing wheels, adjusting derailleurs, or setting up the brakes. It is a total safety hazard.
3.) The quality of the product is very low at target. The frame is whatever, its heavy but its not going to break, same with the shocks. The real difference between a decent bike and a walmart bike is in the shifter components. Cheap shifters are hard to adjust properly and very fickle when it comes to staying properly adjusted. Combine this with the fact that they're not being assembled by a real bike tech and you have a problem 9 times out of 10.
4.) Add ~35 bucks to the cost of any bike from wal-mart because you will most likely have to get it serviced at a bike shop to get it to work properly.
5.) cheap bikes that are set up poorly from the get go will have more problems over the life of the bike. Either you will spend more money getting them fixed (think around 20 a visit) OR you will get frustrated and leave the bike to sit in the garage. Then you've just wasted $200. This is probably the most common thing. People buy cheap bikes, they break, then they get frustrated and just give up.

Heres a compromise. You don't have to spend 400 bucks to get a decent bike! Heck, if you're too intimidated by a real bike shop you don't even have to go there.

Not everyone here will agree with me, but I used to work at a sporting goods store (Di*ks) and can tell you then sell a range of bikes, from almost wal-mart level up to $2000 bikes. You can get a quality bike from a sporting goods store, assembled by a competent mechanic for less than you would pay at a bike shop. Our cheapest quality bike at dicks was ~230 dollars, but 299 was the absolute best bang for your buck. You got quality shimano trigger shifters (not the garbage grip shifters that come with a cheaper bike) double wall rims (less maintenance) and a lifetime warranty on the product. In case you want the models, for women it would be the diamondback Lustre 1 and the Lustre 2.

Good indoor exercise bike?

T2007

I'm looking for an exercise bike or indoor cycle with high resistance for building leg muscles under $1000. There are so many different types of them, I'm afraid to buy something that's meant for cardio, or doesn't have enough resistance. If anyone knows a good bike out there, I'd appreciate your advice.
For Alex.P Well, I don't mean to build muscles "bodybuilding style" - just add some tonus, and I kind of don't see myself with barbell (whatever barbel is)I think those things are more suitable for guys.

Answer
All competitive cyclists and triathletes, myself included, use a regular bike mounted on a trainer. The least expensive trainers (minus bike....) are less than $100. That's what I use. Its sturdy, durable, and has plenty of resistance. The gold standard is the Computrainer, which has a computer interface, and allows you to record all sorts of training data, as well as train and race on a variety of virtual courses.

All cycling will strengthen your leg muscles. Not sure what a tonus is, and I have no use for bodybuilding either, but all the female cyclists and triathletes I know have pretty nice looking legs.

So do the guys. Since most of them shave, its a little scary sometimes when you lust after someone from behind, pass them, and find out they have a beard and no mammaries......

Maximize distance on an exercise bike?

ThaRedDevi

I'm taking part in a charity bike ride thing at work but it's turned into a little competition! It's a stationary exercise bike, what is the best way to maximize my distance? Is it low resistance or just pace it and push for the last 5 mins? It's basically furthest distance in a half hour stint

Answer
On an exercise bike, a consistent pace works for me. Keep your cadence at 80 RPM. Set the resistance so that you can complete the entire 30 minutes at that pace. You'll be much better off than slowly mashing hard. Assess your situation with 10 minutes to go. Maybe you've got some energy left in the tank and can pick up the pace just a bit. Sprint it for that last 2 minutes. You know you've maxed it out when you can barely get off the bike at the end of the ride.

Drink during your ride. Use a sports drink, not water. Everyone is different. A few sips every 15 minutes at first and then later at 10 minutes works for me. YMMV.

Heavy guy and exercise bike?

idk

Im 25 and about 380 pounds. I use to be 400 about a month ago. Ive been looking for exercise bike to help me burn more but alot of them have 250 and 300 lb weight limits :/ does anyone know where i can get one that has a 400 lb weight limit for under 400$

Answer
Congratulations on your goals; cycling is a great way to lose weight and get fit.

I'm going to say that most well-made exercise bikes (stationary bikes) will bear your weight, as long as they're set up and assembled well. However, call a few stationary bike companies and ask them about weight limits. Weight limits are often more for insurance and warranty reasons than anything else, but sometimes they're there because the bike or component or whatever is physically unable to bear that kind of weight.

Not affiliated with them in any way, but I know that Lemond makes some great products. http://www.lemondfitness.com/product_listing/20/g-force-exercise-bikes

Is biking an effective form of exercise?

Gabby

I have been going biking every day for varying amounts of time.. I am sure it does help, but would a different form of exercise, like running, roller blading, be significantly more effective?
Oh, and as a side note - if anyone knows how I can build my arms up more, I'd appreciate it :) I am doing push -ups, but is there anything else? I am trying to get better at softball - I figure arm strength would help ;D

Answer
Biking is also good because it's low-impact. Easy on your joints. It's best to have variety in your exercise routines, so bike once in a while, then run, then rollerblade, then swim...

As for arms, push-ups are really great - good for biceps, triceps, pectorals and abs, too (if you're doing them right :)

You could also try picking up two 5 or 8 lbs hand weights and get a routine of various arm lifts and curls to work the various muscles in your arms.

If I tighten my abs while riding my exercise bike will that help tone the abs?

Answer
It might but how long can you hold on to the tightened stance while riding a bike?

Hard.

I suggest you do these abs exercises, to tighten, flatten and tone your abs:

1. Bicycle maneuver
2. Crunch on exercise ball
3. Captain's chair

These 3 are touted as the most effective abs exercises and proven as well (by American Council of Exercise).

Here's the instruction to do them: http://www.perfect-body-toning.com/stomach-exercises.html

Do I exercise enough?

bananabrea

- I ride my bicycle twice a day 5 days a week for 15 minutes (one way is up hill, one way downhill).
-I do a pilates class for 1 hour once a week.
-I do a Step class for an hour once a week.
-I do a yoga class once every other week, and I run for 20 minutes every other week.
-I run for 25 minutes on a running machine once a week.
-I do a hip hop class twice a week (each class = 1 hour)
I am 15 years old

Answer
You do less exercise than you might think. But don't get me wrong - you do more than most teen girls for sure.

1. 15 min on a bike is VERY short.
2. pilates is almost worthless
3. yoga (see pilates)
4. 25 on a treadmill 1 x week very minimal.

Aside from a diverse work out schedule (nothing wrong with that) you have chosen poor exercises in general. Pilates and yoga are OK for stretching, but that's it - they are popular with women because they think they are getting a great workout without doing the "work" part.

You have no strength exercises and your aerobic exercises are frequent but too short. Depending on how intense your dance and step class are, they maybe the best 2 things you are doing.

Try to get an hour of aerobic (at 1 time) 5-6 days a week. Add 3 days of 1/2 hour of weight training. Do a little stretching a few time a week.

elliptical vs. exercise bike?

falsename

which burns more calories? what muscles does each target? which works better for you and why? i was thinking about buying a cheap one of them (because i'm 16) and if you had a good reference as to where they sell really good cheap ones of either or the better one, feel free to share :) thanks!

Answer
fk

If you believe the numbers o their systems, the elliptical is the hands down winner in calorie burn / hr.

Gym equipment at home, for a good unit is prohibitive.... and, most of the time goes unused after a short period of time. I suggest that you consider a gym membership, or bike riding rather than buying a unit. Do the math. Then if you are going to stay with it, consider the purchase. There are many no commitment, 30 day notice programs out there (24 hour and Bally's).

how do i keep the recumbent exercise bike at the gym from hurting my private area?

Angel

the seat hurts my vaginal area is there any way to cure that

Answer
Well, they do make special bike shorts for women, and men, too, that have a gel pad in the crotch area that makes riding a bike, or an exercise bike, MUCH more comfortable (see link, below).

Also, for what it's worth, my girlfriend used to sometimes wear a maxi-pad when we went out for a bike ride, and she said that that helped a lot.

Also, look under the seat on the exercise bike to see if it's adjustable in any way, and if it is, believe it or not, try adjusting it so that the nose of the saddle points up, because that will actually force you to sit back further and that relieves the pressure!

Good luck!...

exercise bike? or go gym?

Krissy

im thinking of going to the gym but then i thought that i have to pay $20 everyweek. would it better if i just buy exercise bike? treadmill? its way cheaper

Answer
It definitely is but this also depends on your goals. If you're just trying to trim down a bit, a bike or treadmill may be enough. But if you want to reach the next level, a gym is required b/c there are a lot of free weights. Lean muscle helps boost your metabolism. How does Chad Johnson get paid if he sits out?

Oh Yea Its

I thought if you didn't play, you don't get paid. Or is it he doesn't get paid but his contract still counts against the salary cap?
Ok, what about suspensions? Can the Bengals suspend Johnson for not honoring his contract? How come when the league suspends a player, he loses his game check?

Answer
He doesn't. He can show up and say "OWWW! My Hamstring," then ride the exercise bike like T.O. in Dallas.

Will I be exercising too much?

BrownEyedM

Hi.
I want to use my bike to commute to/from school which is 20 miles roundtrip. This would be 5 days out of the week (mon-fri).

I am also currently in a weight lifting class two times a week that includes running for 12 mins. Since we have running tests throughout the class, I want to run/jog for 30 minutes everyday

Would riding my bike to school in addition to taking the weight lifting class (includes running everyday) become too much?

My stats:
Female
Not in the best shape.... 5'2" , 139lb
live in dallas (it is currently warm for this time of the year)

Answer
It could get tiring, but I don't think it would be too much. As long as you rest on the weekend.

Answer
about 80-100 calories.

exercise bike??????????

bubble87

i want to lose weight on my thighs and tone them up.
will an exercise bike help with this???

Answer
Hey
An exercise bike will burn calories, increase circulation and endurance and generally improve your health. However, using an exercise bike will not build muscle. Cardiovascular exercise can help the heart and the overall health of a person, but its effect on weight loss is actually limited for many people. If you are exercising without dieting, you probably will not notice a significant change. Cardiovascular exercise, such as an exercise bike can provide, is actually far more effective in weight management than weight loss. An exercise bike, even at full resistance, is not likely to shape your abdominal areas, so if you are looking to lose weight and raise your metabolic rate, then try resistance training exercises, such as weights, machines or even push ups.
