Biking-good or bad?

Q. Is biking a lower impact excercise on the knees? also will help tone abs?

Answer
Yes, cycling is a very low impact exercise and in my opinion is the best aerobic activity you can do. As long as your bike fit is good you will not experience any pain other than lactic acid build up in your legs, which is good pain. As an aspiring pro cyclist I cannot stess to you enough how important your bike be fitted to you. Its like getting a tailor-made suit. Go to your local bike shop and they will give you that for free with a purchase with a bike or you can simply ask them if your current bike fits you fine. If you riding a bike to small or big you will have back, knee, shoulder, and you name it all kinds of joint pain. The second part of your question is yes a little bit, if you stand up out of the saddle you will work and tone your abs. Most cyclists have a weak abdominal area and do sit up to make them stronger. Although just the simple act of riding a bike will likely will lower you body fat and you will see definition.

DO exercise bikes work and how so?

desirable

I mean do they target one part of your body and not the others...or will it help me lose weight in my thighs and abs and other places as well....also I just bought one and have only used it twice..(i bought it 2 days ago) it doesnt feel like much of a work out i mean i sweat but it doesnt feel satisyfing so does that mean it isnt working as well??

Answer
mostly an exercise bike is for endurance and cardio work out meaning it is supposed to get your heart pounding. It will also work most of the muscles on you body whereas other exercises don't. To make things more difficult try a spin class and then you will understand the power of an exercise bike. They have them regularly at all YMCA's. Go to one or two of them to get a feel of what your supposed to do

Most of my exercise program is walking. Is that okay for weight loss?

CookieCrun

My exercise program is walking the dog for an hour each day, 10 minutes on a stationary bike, and 5 minutes of weights to help tone my arms.
Is this okay? I'm not overweight, but I'm trying to lose 3 kilos. I eat healthy.
Just that people sometimes make comments saying that I'm not really exercising because walking doesn't count.
Makes you wonder what the hell your supposed to do....

Answer
If this is an exercise program you can maintain, then it is the best exercise program for you.

Don't worry about the weight. Work out to be happy and healthy. If you eat well proportioned meals, and work out a little you will lose weight as a side effect.

weight loss?

RCPD Expl.

How do I lose weight quickly?
and how do I get rid of stretch marks?
I use to be very muscular and had abs etc. then I took a season off of hockey and became inactive and now I have gained weight, i am not fat but I want to have my abs back.
HELP
The only reason I have stretch marks(legs) are because of the muscles and squats I used to do now I stopped and they've lost muscle. HELP!!!!

Answer
Okay well what you need to do is get help from your parents. You will need to eat 500 calories less than what you normally eat and exercise for about a half hour each day. Stay away from foods with bad fats (saturated and trans) and foods that are high in carbohydrates (pasta, rice). I know it sounds cliche but eat a lot of veggies and fruits and drink lots of water, especially while you're having your meal to trick you stomach into thinking you have eaten more than you actually have.

â¢Just keep it simple... here's how:-

1) Eat more steam food, lean meat, vegies and fruits

2) Cut out the junk food, soda drinks and snacks

3) drink plenty of water / green tea

4) Exercise - look at combining weights and cardio into your program. you can look at alternating upper and lower body exercises without rest, say bicep curls, then lunges , rest and repeat. With cardio, try sprinting 100m, jog 100m and repeat.

Here's a review link to a program
http://www.squidoo.com/burnthefat-feedth...

Useful articles there too.

5) Have 5-6 healthy meals a day(1 plate portions) to keep your body satisfied

6) if you have cravings drink water or eat fruits
here's an article to a healthy diet
http://lose-quick-weight.blogspot.com/20...
http://www.squidoo.com/fatloss4idiotsrev...

7) have an action plan for long term goals, start off with small goals and increase it gradually over time. Get your parents involved to live a healthy lifestyle and be active. Doing it together is better then going it alone!

Good luck
You're probably too young to lift weights, so I would suggest running, jogging, and walking for exercise. You could also rollerblade, bike, jump rope... anything that will get your heart pumping.

Avoid foods that are high in sugars: candy, soda, cookies, and other sweets. Also avoid foods that are high in fats, especially fried foods (like french fries and chicken nuggets from fast food places, and potato chips.) Try not to eat a lot of salty foods.

Drink milk every day, and lots and lots of water.

For snacks, eat fruit, cheese that isn't too high in fat (like cheddar or even string cheese), light yogurt, fat free pudding... Switch to wheat bread instead of white. Eat at least a couple servings of vegetables per day (they'll fill you up but are low in calories).

You don't really need to know that much about carbohydrates, etc. You probably already know which foods are healthy and which ones aren't so good. Just use your common sense and don't eat until you are so full you can barely move :) Good luck!

Commuting to work on bicycles-is there a trend?

diceman

Gas over 3$ I bought a hybrid style bike-I have been biking 20 miles round trip to work one day a week.

Answer
Yes there is a trend and it is up.

Some governments actually promote it. Although this usually only takes place after much lobbying and consultation by/with cycling groups. Once the benefits are made clear it isn't so hard to get governments more interested.

⢠Transport:
Maintaining and improving cycling networks
involves high costs to the national, state and local
governments, while the costs of congestion are estimated to higher.More people riding bicycles can help reduce congestion and this cost to the community. Bikes also have minimal impact on road surfaces.
Providing cycling infrastructure and facilities is space efficient.
Over short distances, for example up to five kilometres, bikes
can be quick and efficient as they enable door to door service and
can be parked close to destinations.

⢠Health:
Regular cycling, as a moderate intensity physical
activity, provides a number of health benefits. Cycling can
contribute to the prevention of a number of physical and
psychological illnesses such as coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and depression. Physical inactivity is now one of the highest risk factors contributing to illness, disability and premature death for both men and women . Increasing the number of cycling trips also has health benefits for the wider community
such as reduced air pollution and strain on the health care
system. Importantly, the rate of injury to cyclists âis lower than
other popular forms of exercise.

⢠Economy:
The cost of buying and maintaining a bike is around 1% of the cost of buying and maintaining a car. Cycling 10 km to work each day can save an
individual around $1700 per year in transport costs. Businesses can also benefit from encouraging staff to cycle to work as staff will be more punctual, take less sick days, and demonstrate improved productivity. In the local area, travelling by bicycle means goods and services are purchased locally, boosting the local economy. Also, provision for cycling can encourage bicycle tourism to regions and in turn attract new businesses and jobs.

⢠Social equity:
Bicycles can provide affordable, accessible and independent travel for a large number of people.
This includes many members of the community whose access to transport might otherwise be limited, such as the unemployed, low income earners, and children. More bikes and cycling facilities in neighbourhoods reduces motor vehicle traffic, providing an improved and safer road network for pedestrians including children, seniors, and people with disabilities

⢠Environment:
Bicycle use is pollution free and the production, use and maintenance of bicycles consumes minimal fossil fuels.
The transport sector currently produces about 16%
greenhouse gas emissions and is the fastest
growing sector of all emissions. Sixty one percent of car trips are less than 10 km and these are the most polluting of car trips. Replacing just some of these
trips with bike rides will improve air quality significantly. For
each kilometre cycled instead of driven, greenhouse gas
emissions are reduced by up to one third of a kilogram
. Other environmental benefits from increased bicycle usage include reduced vehicle noise emissions and reduced land needs for car parking.

There are many countrys in the world that are going to great lengths to promote commuting.

I am more familiar with statistics of my own country (Australia) but these generally parrellel those of the U.S. and the U.K..

To give you an Idea of what can be achieved by lobbying governments please have a read though this document.

http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/resources/file/eb9ede001f5eed7/Pdf_queensland_cycle_strategy.pdf

This did take some time to evolve but it is already being implemented. (And it is working). It has taken input from hundreds or interested people and a co-operative government to acheive this.

If you enjoy your cycling maybe you could get the ball rolling where you live. You will find many allies in the cycling community. EVERYBODY BENEFITS

whats better....avanti blade series or giant crx series?

v22impossi

I currently have a giant peleton road bike and want to downgrade to a flat bar. Its to do a bit of excercise, brissie to bays, mall to malls. and pull a kids bike trailer behind. What do u recommend?

Answer
Both of these brands have a good selection in each range.
Giant released its 2008 range a fortnight ago so there are some 2007 models still available.

I doubt you would be unhappy with either brand. Giant offer women specific models in the crx 2 and crx4 models. The difference is shorter cranks wider saddle and shorter stem. (and colour) Avanti will probably do these changes also.

So here is what I would recommend.

Work out what component level you want. How far how often and the type of riding. (I went for the nexus 8 system for my wife Blade 8 or crx city.)

Work out your budget

Narrow down the selection to one or two models in each brand

Visit both dealers and play one against the other for best posible deal.

I found floor stock pretty terrible in flat bars. I was able to work out the right size though.(Yes I live in south east Queensland). If they happen to have the model that your after see if you can take it for a spin.

I recently when through the this exercise for my wife. she admits to being "hopeless with the gears" so we went with the nexus 8 speed hub. This is also a low maintanence rig. WE settled with the 2007 crx city pro after a toing and froing with the blade 8. Both where good bikes but the deal on the giant was just a little better.

Wife is out riding it at the moment. I should be out with her but the three month old is a bit young for the trailer yet.

A good budget/quality exercise bike?

Tyler Schn

I plan on using this bike 2-3 hours a day. I would prefer a bike that counts miles and maybe calories. 50-150$ range. Maybe 200$

Answer
I would check the local ebay or Craig's list for a good used one. People buy exercise equipment all the time and never use it for more then a few weeks.

exercise equipment?

Mike Mahon

Hi,
I started running on the treadmill, i do 40 mins at night time. 10 mins of running and 30 mins of fast/slow walking.
I like to get another exercise equipment, just so i can rotate what i do everyday. My main aim is to loose weigh. I am 200pounds, 5,10 height. Which equipment do you think it's worth it to buy? i'm not looking towards spending a lot of money.
thanks

Answer
An exercise bike can be a worthwhile investment. Get one that's of good quality, say in the price range of $300- $500.

An exercise ball is another good choice - it's cheap and helps you heaps in strength training.

And dumbbells for weight lifting- cheap and very effective in boosting muscle growth.

Good exercise tips,, shedding stomach fat?

the 411

i just recently had my second child may 31st, i am not able to go outside very often so i am looking for ways to exercise indoors. I have a circuit weight training and a core conditioning exercise class starting mid august, but really want to shed of some extra stomach weight early... PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Answer
try doing crunches, like 200 and that will help a LOT. also, if u have a small ball, such as a soccer ball deflated a little, put that under ur lower back when u do the crunches and that will be more effective. u may want to try the bicycle, where u get on ur back and balance on ur butt with ur feet in the air and ur upper body up as well, then move ur legs like ur riding a bike and lean sided to side using only ur core muscles until u feel a burn. hope I helped!!(:

Exercise equiptment Question, Please help...(Best help gets Best Answer)?

Meagan

I am 22 yrs old, 5' 2" & 250lbs. I am desperatley trying to loose weight & since i stay home all day w my kids i am searching for a good exercise machine since i can be on it all day. What is a good one that would help me loose weight that you know from experiance. Im looking for either a cheap elliptical, a cheap exercise bike, or a gazelle like from walmart or target. Have you lost any weight using yours & how much are you on it & whats the name of it? Please help, i really want to loose weight fast & need help deciding which one to get. But the price range has to be under $200. Thanks for answering & sorry so long.

Answer
to be honest, every single one of those machines will help you lose weight. the only question is: which one would be more fun for you? one of the main reasons exercise programs fail is because people dont find it fun to work out (duh) and quit. my advice would be to do this: go to walmart. go to craigslist. go anywhere where you can look at the machines and pick the one that you are most likely to enjoy. used exercise equipment is everywhere (because people stop working out more than they start). i hope this helps. i know it is very simple information, but its the truth. good luck!

What bike do you consider for a person that might go/be in military?

Ivan Cayet

Okay so i want to start biking again before i enlist in the military. i want to be ready for basic training i want my body to be use to a lot of running so I decide to exercise by riding bikes. I'm very skinny, i walk a lot long distance , I'm young just finish high school last year class of 2012. I plan on getting a fixie bike and a road bike. But the question here what kind of bike do you consider for a person that might start a military life?

Answer
NEITHER kind. Running & cycling use two different muscle groups. If you want to get better at running - then RUN. If you want to ride a bike - a road bike with GEARS is always the more efficient way to go. This is why the derailleur was invented OVER seventy years ago.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derailleur_gears#History

road bike for beginner ?

Favdarum

guys , can i ask something about allez for a beginner rider ? let's say i'm only use in town and for school purpose, do you think is the 2012 or 2013 allez compact should be good ?

and here's what i found from my closest bike store : http://incycle.com/product/12special...t-130913-1.htm,and i need your honest opinion what do you think about this bike if im going to use for a long term ? do i need spend more money to get a entry level carbon road bike with a price that start $1599 ?

the only thing i'm going to use this bike is for fun , ride around my school and also for exercise too. cause before i choose specialized i'm thinking about getting cannondale supersix 5 ultegra it was sale around $1799

Answer
Never - EVER buy a low end carbon fiber bike. Carbon fiber is held together with epoxy & does have a "shelf life". After several years (5 to 7 max) it becomes brittle, weak & could snap or break at the most inopportune time.

If all you need is a good "entry level" bike for school, exercise & fun - an all aluminum Giant Defy 5 would be a much better choice. And less expensive!
http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/defy.5/11498/55823/

Add a rear rack, panniers (saddle bags) & fenders for a true "commuter bicycle". Here's my 2012 model.

Most Comfortable Exercise Bike Seat?

Rivvy

I'm a large girl (283 lbs, 5'6) and have recently bought an exercise bike that I love riding...except for the seat! I am currently putting blankets on the seat, but those slip off and I often have to stop my ride to readjust them. Needless to say, after a 14 mile daily ride (about an hour for me), my butt hurts!

I am looking for recommendations for exercise bike seats that are comfortable that you've actually tried yourself. Please don't just send me links to stores, because I've seen them all. I want personal opinions! Thanks! :)

Answer
The recumbent answer was valid, but since you already have the bike, it doesn't apply.

The best seat is a decent regular bike seat. See below for a selection

http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/SubCategory_10052_10551_400033_-1_400002_400002

There are a lot of good ones. Modern saddles do a good job of avoiding pressure on sensitive parts and minimizing friction, which are your biggest enemies in a saddle. Terry makes some that they claim to be woman-specific. I can't comment, being a man, although my wife has one similar to this that she seems happy with:

http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1085766_-1_1542500_20000_400033

I don't know that picking a specific one would help you any, although I can show you what's currently on my basement trainer. http://www.flickr.com/photos/silverbullet1952/3817746420/

Bear in mind that I have different saddles on my mountain bike and triathlon racing bike, and I find them all reasonably comfortable even after 100+ miles.

What I can tell you is that wide and squishy will probably give you more chafing problems than narrow and hard. To be blunt, your size is probably working against you as far as pressure points. I'm sure part of your objective is to fix that over time.

Also, you'll find that your butt toughens up as you put in the miles. Everybody has that problem early in the season as they go from shorter sessions indoors in the winter to big miles outside. Be patient. You can also help the problem with clothing. Bike shorts are designed the way they are for a reason. The fabric is slick to reduce friction. The chamois prevents seams from tearing up your naughty bits, and provides a little cushion as well.

Keep up the good work.

If you usually exercise allot, do you get moody more when you don't exercise?

Rajiv

Say you're an athlete and train every day, then dont train for a few days?

Or what if you usually do strenuous exercise only once a week, then stop?
or if not moody, just under the weather or something. or any change in the way you feel

Answer
Step exercise

1. Basic medical examination (medical screening) is the most important step. To detect the dangerous diseases that do not show symptoms before. Cardiovascular diseases such as narrow

2. Testing, physical fitness (physical fitness test) to the appropriate group fitness really. Some people even older then it may be practiced like a young man in time.

3. For practice the following sequence.

Start with stretches stretching (stretching) of the muscles and ligaments of the body provides flexibility as protective muscle tear. And reduce pain as well. By approximately 5-10 minutes, then began to warm-up body, such as walking, jog And then returned to practice hard. Such as bike riding, etc. then gradually finance equipment (cool-down) in small increments until it stops. And stretching exercises to stretch again, they may do after the cool-down or are going to shower and then stretch before any stretching exercises.

Exercise

The principle is to exercise.

- Often about 3 days a week. If you're new to exercise should not overdo it.

- Long enough period of time is applicable in a day early stage may be just 10 minutes per day to 1-2 weeks, then gradually add some more time. This period should relate to the frequency and procedures. If you exercise six days per week period may be only 10 minutes is enough if only three days a week, they should exercise 30 minutes to be enough.

- Hard enough to measure heart rate by

1). To find the maximum heart rate [Predict Maximum Heart Rate (PMHR)] by deleting the old 220.

2). Determine the heart rate at rest [Resting Heart Rate (RHR)] by pulse within one minute while awake.

3). PMHR-RHR will bring value to the range of heart rate Heart Rate Range (HRR).

4). The HRR x 60/100 (percentage of intensity to practice the exercises start) is the target heart rate (Target heart rate) required to perform.

For example.

The age of 30 years, resting pulse 80 beats per minute.

PMHR = 220 - 30 = 190.

RHR = 80.

HRR = PMHR - RHR.

= 190 to 80.

= 110.

% HRR = 110 x 60/100.

= 66.

Therefore, Target heart rate = RHR +% HRR = 80 + 66.

= 146 beats per minute.

Appropriate time of exercise.

1. Before meals.

2. If you should leave 2 hours after meals.

3. Or at convenient time. If you exercise at night should stay an hour before bedtime.

4. Should such training at the same time every morning or every evening or every Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

5. Exercise at least 15-20 minutes.

6. During this time hot air is not comfortable.

Warm (WARM-UP).

Warm up is to prepare the body or organ relevant to the movement that will occur later in the exercise to realize. And ready to work hard to. To warm the body by body movements, such as football flick flicked leg swing arm and leg exercise or dancing or jumping, walking fast or jogging slowly. Or run with the short period of time. This will cause increased body temperature. Heart beat a little faster. Blood supply to the various muscles. In order to prepare to work hard to get.

Loosening warm (COOL-DOWN).

After exercise should be heated to release. A movement of the body for some time, such as running slowly or walk for a while so that the leg muscles to contract. And heart rate to slow down. To stop immediately after heavy exercise is very dangerous for the body because the mind stops muscle contraction and force the blood back to the heart less Heart blood was not enough, it may lack the blood. In addition to moving the body soon, after the exercise is to bring waste or lactic acid that occurs during exercise away from the muscles. Helping to reduce tension or muscle aches.

Elliptical Machine VS. Exercises Bike.... Need Advice.?

Sarah

I just road my exercises bike for the first time. 40min, 8miles. I'm not really feeling much? I thought my legs would be really sore after. Given I just got off 10 min ago. But still. Are elliptical machines better then bikes? I really HATE treadmill so if they are a lot of those then I probably wont use it much.
Any advice?
I don't have a lot of time to go outside and walk, I can usually get out there once a day and walk between 1.5-2 miles with the dogs but that's it.
My goal is to tone my legs, I store all my fat there so I'd like to loose fat there as well as tone them.

Answer
I'm like you, I hate the treadmill, but i rate bike above eliptical in terms of fitness and fat burning potential.

With legs and a bike, you really have to push it. Instead of doing flat rate cardio for 40 minutes, which can be pretty borring, try HIIT (high intensity interval training). Goes something like this:

1 min all out sprint
1 min slow pace
repeat for 10 minutes (and gradually over the weeks build this up to 20)

The idea is that you never quite get enough time to fully recover from the sprint. I guarantee you will be exhausted by the end with legs feeling like jelly. Another great thing about HIIT is you feel like you achieved something after and it will burn just as much fat in 10-15 minutes as 40 - 60.

Good luck

Suggestions for starting HIIT workout routine?

Cory

I have changed my diet and lost 30 pounds over the last 7 months, and have increased my exercise (weight lifting, walking, stationary bike) in the last 2 months. I am pleased with the results, but have hit a plateau with the weight loss. I still have 20 pounds to go to reach my goal, so I have tried incorporating High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).

My first workout was on the exercise bike doing a 5 minute warmup followed by four minutes of 6 seconds at 100% effort and 9 seconds at 50% and 5 minutes cool down. This workout absolutely kicked my butt.

The trouble came when I tried my second HIIT workout three days later. My legs just couldn't do it! After just 1 minute, I had to stop.

Is there a better way to start incorporating HIIT into my schedule? I don't mind working hard, I just want to be sure I'm not doing more damage than good.

Thanks!

Answer
yeah hiit is harder on your legs. i would say you might want to just do 1 day of hiit for the first couple of weeks, the rest of your training should be low-impact cardio and weights of corse. if your legs are still sore from a previous trainins session, you deff shouldnt give 100%. also i dont think you should do hiit the day after you workout your legs. try doing more walking, jogging, eliptical, and jump rope for your regular cardio workouts, but add in hiit for just one day when you feel like you have enough energy. hiit is killer lol, i just started doing it too and man, wow, i feel the difference too. anyways im sure you can bump up the # of training days as your body gets used to that kind of training. hope this helps

What are some good exercises to do at a gym? I am 6'0" and weigh 223. I am starting to go to the gym today and I was wondering what were some good exercises to do to tone up all parts of my body? I was also wondering if anyone knew what my ideal weight should be?

Answer
What do you plan on doing at the gym? Lose weight? Tone up? Better cardiovascular? Well, to start with, you need to: begin warmup exercises(jumping jacks, jogging in place, riding a stationary bike, etc.) Next, pick a part of the body to train (upper body, lower body, back, arms, quads, delts, bicepts, etc.) Be sure to rest in between sets and also drink lots of water. Also, remember to stretch in between sets as well. I would suggest you begin with the weight machines if you are not used to working out, and look into hiring a personal trainer or fitness coach to help you out. I have been working out with a personal trainer for about 4 years now and have made great strides towards my perfect physique. My body fat level is down to 4% now and am ripped and shreadded...Good luck and hopefully one day you will achieve the goal I have achieved now...

Does anyone know where I can find reviews on exercise recumbent bikes? Or recommend one?

costlyprin

I have been looking at the Edge 440 recumbent exercise bike, but cannot find any information on how good they are. I haven't heard of Edge before and wonder if anyone has anything made by them or where I might be able to go online to find any reviews on it.
Also if someone has one that they would like to recommend. It is going to be a gift for my father who is approx 6'2" with long legs so the seat needs to be quite adjustable. Thanks

Answer
There is one review listed on amazon.com for the Edge 440.
http://www.amazon.com/Edge-440r-Magnetic-Recumbent-Bike/dp/B0006624Y8
There are other Edge products that have more reviews you may want to read those over.
roadbikereview.com has reviews on trainers, but I didn't see the one you listed.

Should I buy this Recumbent Exercise Bike?

Q. I am considering to buy Weslo Pursuit Ct 3.8 R Recumbent Exercise Bike
I am not overweight. I need some physical activity to burn calories and reduce my cholesterol and belly fat.
Any one used this bike before? The reviews seems good and price is in my range.
Thank you.

Answer
not that one but i have a schwinn active 20 which is one of their cheap recumbents and i ride it alot and it good enough for burning calories. it had lots of positive reviews from users who purchased it from amazon.
so if the weslo pursuit gets good reviews then it should be fine. recumbent bikes are great. i can ride mine for a hr. without any discomfort in my rear end.
