Are recumbent bikes good for toning thighs?

Danielle

Answer
Tone is related to the amount of body fat that you have. In general building lean muscle mass through exercise is the best way to reduce body fat because lean muscle tissue raises your metabolism.Scientifically speaking you cannot "spot reduce". No product, or exercise has ever been clinically pr oven to reduce fat in just one area. For example if you do chest exercises your chest will get bigger. The abdominal muscles are underneath a natural layer of fat, so if you only work the abdominal you will get stronger, but only when you reduce the fat will you expose the abs that you have been strengthening. You have to lower your total body-fat % through continued focus on a healthy diet and weight resistance exercise for all major muscle groups. Remember to eat 4 to 5 small healthy meals daily instead of skipping meals (starvation actually slows your metabolism).

Is working out on a exercise bike for 40 mins, burning 200 calories good?

Christian

I weigh around 180 but more like 190 and I had been wanting to get back in shape so if I eat 3 meals a day, regular portion and burn about 200 calories would that be enough to lose weight. I'm also cutting out all soda and chips + junk food. Note that every month I lose weight I'll be pushing myself more. Like move up to an hour in a month or so. I'm drinking a lot of water and going to be walking my dog every night about a mile.

Answer
Yes, but If you are doing 40 min's you should be burning way more than 200 calories. I have a recumbent bike and I can get to 200 calories in 20 min's with very light resistance. At the moment I'm doing 30 min's a nite and burning about 450 calories with a program with varied heavy to medium resistance. If you rode every night and burned 200 calories that would put you at 1400 calories a week. It takes 3500 calories to burn 1 pound of fat. So that is about 1.7lbs of fat burn a month with no extra calorie intake. But I think you would be burning way more than that in 40 min's if you are pushing those pedals at all.

The main thing is if you are just starting out is to not over do it at first. If you are out of shape like I was you are not gonna make 40 min's if you are really pushing yourself. Start out with 10 to 15 min's for the first week to get used to it and add about 5 min's per week or whatever you can handle and build up to 40 min's. If your bike has different resistance levels increase those a little at a time and you will see big improvements quickly. Not so much fat loss at first but in your breathing and just the way you feel. The fat loss will come if you stick with it. And remember to push yourself for those 10 to 15 min's instead of just going through the motions. The harder you are working the more you will get out of it. Just work your way up to 40 min's instead of jumping right into 40 min sessions so you won't hate it and quit. That last sentence is more important than anything else I've wrote.

Also write down how long you rode for and how many calories you burned per session. That will help keep you motivated and see the progress you are making. And remember burning 3500 calories = 1lb of fat. So for example if you was able to work your way upto 500 calories burned a day after a while, that would = 3500 calories per week. 1lb of fat burned per week at that point.

best manifacturer of recumbent exercise bike?

gpballenti

Answer
There are many excellent recumbent bikes on the market today. Life Fitness (one of the most common commercial brands) received top ratings from Consumer Reports for their R3-5 recumbent bike that was released this year. Schwinn Fitness also won an award for their 213 recumbent bike. Another notable brand is Lemond Fitness. The Lemond GForce recumbent bike is one of the most innovative new designs - it's self generating (no plug in needed), has a low step over height (very easy for therapy or overweight exercisers), and has a very comfortable seat that fully reclines. The GForce has a very wide range of resistance that is good for beginners on the low end and gives the serious cyclist an amazing workout on the high end. There are many other great recumbent bikes on the market today so the best question you need to answer is which is the best bike for you. Always try exercise equipment before you buy it. The equipment should be comfortable, sturdy, and covered under a good warranty (10 years to Lifetime is standard for quality equipment). Also consider the training programs included - the more expensive models will include a variety of programs to keep you motivated and challenged. If a bike isn't comfortable, fun, and challenging then you won't use it. Schwinn Fitness equipment is available at a wide variety of sporting goods and fitness stores but I would highly recommend finding a good local specialty fitness store - you'll get better service from experienced staff, better local support, and a better selection of choices from entry level to commercial grade equipment.

BIKE FOR 270LB WOMAN?

Jennifer

I want to begin riding a bike around everywhere as an exercise. maybe 1 hr a day. i weight 270 and want to make sure I get a bike that supports me well. maybe take it up hiking hills on the weekends as well. so I need a GOOD but AFORDABLE bike, maybe cute? but thats the least of my worries. I was looking at this one

http://www.walmart.com/ip/26-L-Karaoke-cruiser-comfort-bike-model-26730-white/12509652#ProductDetail

but it doesnt show weight limit. any opinions?

Thank you

also, what other gear besides helmets are necessary to wear (like its illegal if you dont wear it) I haven't been bicycling since I was a kid so I dont know anything! Fill me in! lol all I heard is that it's good exrcise. I loved riding bikes when I was a kid!

Answer
That bike won't be much fun to ride on any kind of a hill. It is a heavy, single speed cruiser, suitable for leisurely rides on flat roads. If you are planning to ride your bike for exercise this may not be the best choice. Bikes in this price range are not going to be good quality. On the plus side, the bike should have no trouble supporting your weight, and the simple drive system should not be too trouble prone. The bike is simple enough that assembly will not be too bad, often a big problem with bikes sold in Walmart. Odds are this bike won't last you very long before things start to wear out. At this low a price a lot of corners have to be cut to produce a bike.

Question about exercise bike?

Miranda

I'm trying to lose 10 lbs of fat in 1-2 months.
I heard the exercise bike can help but does it actually burn fat WITHOUT creating muscle? I don't want muscular thighs. I'm trying to look lean. If the bike does cause your thighs to get muscular and bulky, what exercise can I do for lean thighs?

Answer
It's hard to target weight loss; you can target muscle building, but the fat comes off from wherever it feels like.

So, go ahead and bike -you'll look (and be) toned, not fatty, which is good. It's highly unlikely you'll get enough muscle to be bulky.
But if you're really worried about it, just vary your workout routine a bit; try doing stretch and isomorphic workouts sometimes, or lift weights (again, if you're a woman [which I assume you are because you don't want muscle] it's actually really really hard to gain enough muscle to be bulky), or try a different full-body workout like swimming.

Is investing in a exercise bike worth the money?

Im a very active fit person, although Im super busy too, sometimes I only get to work out at night. I cant afford the gym. Can someone help me make a decision on purchasing an inexpensive bike that will keep me in shape?is it worth it?

Thank you for your time & help:)

Answer
Until you are sure I would just buy a used one from the local Ebay or Craig's list. People buy those things all of the time and use them for a couple of weeks or for only 10 min a day because they are so boring time actually stops when you are using one. You would be better off with a real bicycle and a trainer to put it on when the weather turns bad. You want to get a heart rate monitor to help you stay in the correct zone. I usually start out with a very easy 10 min warm up. After the warm up you want to pedal at a high cadence 70-90 rpm's with a lite pedal pressure. That will allow you to use your slow twitch muscles that use fat as a fuel and can go for a very long time. It's also very good for your cardiovascular system.

Find a good deal used, if you don't like it you can resell it at a small or no loss. If you are not sure if it's a good quality stationary bike check Amazon for reviews on it.

Best exercise bike - Tunturi E80 or Life Fitness C1?

Does anyone own either of these bikes and what are your experiences with it?

Would really appreciate advice. Thanks.xx

You see the Life Cycle in most gyms, it's probably better.

Which should I buy, elliptical trainer/exercise bike?

Marii

I have the option of buying a elliptical trainer or a exercise bike. I want to lose fat and burn more calories, which should I get? Please don't tell me to get a jump rope or go running, I don't have the option to as I get home late at night and would like the exercise in the comfort of my home :)

Answer
When you say exercise bike, does that include Spinning bikes? Given the choice between an elliptical trainer and a Spinning bike, I would pick the bike. Elliptical trainers don't challenge your fitness levels like Spinning bikes. I've taken Spinning classes and they were brutal for those out of shape participants like me. Especially, hill climbs. But, when your heart rate shows improvement, you will feel it all over. With the right diet, you will be energized.

Loosing fat and burning more calories will come as a result of any fitness regiment, but to increase the cardio takes exercise like Spinning, swimming, and of course running. Get yourself a Spinning bike; a participation DVD with music; a heart monitor (important); water bottles; and good padded bike shorts. If you've never been on a Spinning bike, be prepared to find out just how many muscles you have on your backside and in between the cheeks. You will hurt for about two weeks. Then, it goes away. But, you can do Spinning sessions with a DVD at home in front of a TV. Roughly, an hour each time with stretching; warm-up; Spinning; slow down; and cool down.

Something else to consider...the Body For LIfe Program. Everyone I know who's tried it has shown great results after 12 weeks. It's a small commitment, but one worth the effort.

What is a good exercise bike?

I am looking to get back into shape and want to get a bike.My bf would also be using it and he is already in shape so i need something that would be a challenge for him as well

Answer
Get a spin bike something like this will work. The problem with stationary bikes is the boredom, a 30 min routine feels like hours. Get a real bike and get on the road or rail trails and have a lot more fun. You can always put the bike on a trainer in the winter or when the weather gets bad.

Opinion on exercise bike?

colorguard

I love to bike and i need to lose weight. I would get a regular bike but i live in the middle of nowhere and the roads are not that safe to ride with a bike. So would it be a good idea to get an exercise bike? Would it help to lose weight when combined with other exercises??

Answer
I absolutley love my exercise bike!! It is a York c301 Diamond and cost me $650 on sale. It has many different programs and I have it set up in a room with a tv right infront of it. Whenever i am bored, looking for something to do or feel like exercising safely, I jump on the bike. I love it and would highly recommend it. The seat is big and comfy and it has an electronic screen that records, calories, speed and distance.
It has been the best money ever spent.
Go for it, it really sounds like you are a perfect candidate for one.

How to use exercise bike as cardio training?

Tinker

hi im currently on a diet and now i have about 10kg left to lose, today a bought an exercise bike, and the sales man told me not to start toning as if i do so i will stop loosing weight, i need to do some cardio exercise to lose more weight, what is the difference between toning and cardio, how do i use the bike so that i will be doing cardio??

Answer
Basically, you need to exercise to elevate your heart rate (you should be out of breath). This sort of exercise is the most calorie intensive and therefore burns any excess fat quickly. Interval training is a great way to do this. Simply cycle at a pace that you find difficult for five minutes, then drop to a slower recovery pace for the next five. Keep alternating between the two paces for half an hour at first. You'll be able to increase this once you gain fitness and endurance. Using the bike in this way will provide you with a much more effective workout than simply cycling at a steady pace for the same amount of time.
