can I still lose weight from using an exercise bike?

wawajelly

or will I have to go out on my bike? I would like to have firmer and more shapely legs and I was told cycling was the best for this. I have an exercise bike - will that do the trick or will I have to ride outside on my bike? I kind of live in a rough area so I'm not especially fond of riding my bright pink bicycle around on the streets.

Answer
Exercise bikes are great for losing weight. I suggest getting a heart rate monitor and keeping your heart rate in the "fat burning zone" (which will depend on your age and other factors. I am 35 and keep mine in the 125-135 bpm range). Many researchers suggest that in this range, your body burns about 85% fat, while at higher heart rates it burns less. An excercise bike is a great way to go for long periods at a constant level like this -- tough to do on the road. If you are training for something other than weight loss, the above suggestion is not the best way to train. If you don't want to buy a heart rate monitor, I suggest taking your heart rate manually (checking your pulse against a clock) and trying to pinpoint the cadence (how many pedal rotations per minute) at which you maintain that heart rate. That should get you pretty close.

As far as shaping your legs, an exercise bike will help, but going at the above levels will not do as much as really pushing your muscles to the limit (which usually takes you out of the fat burning zone, though). In addition, I have found that nothing builds muscle and cardiovascular endurance like hitting the road on a real bike. Increasing the tension on an exercise bike and actually going up a steep hill are two entirely different things. Both are good for you, however, and if you don't have a bike that is fun to ride outside, you aren't as likely to stick with it. So go with what works.

Good luck!

Exercise Bike?

Dose the Exercise bike help to lose wight from the upper side of the body? if yes, is it as the same level as the lower side, more, or less?

Answer
Depends on the bike. Some bikes engage the arms, however, most do not. The bike isn't for toning up, really, it's a cardio exercise primarily. If you want to tone up, the best way to do that is to do some sort of strength training (our club calls it "Sculpt" class...there's also "body pump" or just working out on the machines, OR it's entirely possibly to do a strength routine at home with a set of handheld weights, and possibly an exercise ball). Strength training should be done 3 days per week, taking a day off in between to let the muscles repair.

Of course the bike helps to tone your legs, but honestly when I do spin, my upper body doesn't get any true toning at all.

Best affordable mountain bike?

cetm1990

So i really want to buy a mountain bike and go on trails (such as swamps and the woods) but first i need a bike! lol. im 6 ft tall and about 200 lbs. i want a bike that wont fall apart when taking it through intermediate trails and it would be nice if its not too heavy (so i can lift it up and hook on to my roof rack of my car) the puzzle here is, i dont want to spend more than $300 max! im not a professional nor do i plan to become one. this is mostly for exercise and leisure :)

Answer
$300 max? Through the swamps? Raise your spending limit or find a good used one on craigslist.

Seen a website called Bikes Direct.com? For slightly over $300 you could get one that fits the bill. You assemble the bike. Fast & free UPS shipping. No sales tax, except in Texas where they are based out of. I've linked a few below.

Exercising??????????

I usually walk/run the treadmill for 4 miles on an incline for 70-80 minutes. If I go on a 6 mile bike ride for a little over an hour, and continure with my 1300 calorie diet with lots of water, should I see weight loss? I am trying to break my plateau. I need to lose 16 lbs by August 31st

Answer
you should see weight loss there, but attempt to speed up for 2-5 minutes and slow down for 8-10 minutes, go different speeds and different amounts and it will shock your body into more calories burned. Same with your bike ride. I recently read an article that stated that based on a scientific study.

also weight lift. do arms and core every other day, and legs in between. when your muscles are hurting a bit the next day (not painfully pulled, but a good hurt), your body is repairing them and you are burning extra calories just by sitting there! I got that tidbit from a personal trainer.

good luck.

How many minutes a day/or week should one spend on (a) an exercise bike and (b) a thread mill?

VelvetRose

Please give me the ideal time to effectively lose weight over the next few months. Thank you.

Answer
i think a good goal for the week is 1000 calories burned at the gym. i go to the gym 5 days a week on most weeks and try for 3-400 calories each day i go in, just on machines. Then i actually work out. 300 calories is about 30 minutes. some people its more some people its less. 10 calories a minute is a good number. I heard in a health class in college that the body doesnt begin to burn fat until about 15-20 minutes into the work out. if you only go for 15 minutes you didnt really get much done. 5 days a week 30 min a day. eat healthy cut sugars and fats and you should look great in 6 weeks. good luck.

Exercise equipment - bike, eliptical, treadmill - need opinions please!?

Lynsea .

I am considering a piece of equipment for my home. I've used all three at some point over the years, but it's been awhile. I can't really decide which piece to get as they all have their good and bad points. I'm looking for some extra input to help me make this decision. And if anyone has a particular brand/model to recommend, I'd love to hear that as well. I don't need anything too fancy, but I want enough features so that there is a variety... such as tension control. I would like to know distance, time spent, calories burned, etc. Don't need any of the music inputs, although I wouldn't scratch one off the list if it had that. I want something that is durable and long lasting as it will be used every day, by at least myself and probably one other person a couple of times a week. I've been leaning toward an eliptical, but I know the least about them. I'm looking for a good solid cardio workout. I'm bored with the videos and am ready for something else to keep me motivated and change things up a bit. Thanks for any input you can offer.

Answer
i like a recumbent bike that has programmed terrain.
that way the tension automatically adjust so that it's like you are riding uphill at times.
i like the ones at sears just as well as at the sporting goods stores.
the proform models are cheaper that the nordic track and diamondback models
sitting on the proform models is more comfortable to me.
i've used recumbent exercise bikes at the gym and it is the most fun of the cardio equipment to me and something i enjoy is something i will stick with.

Exercising Bikes. Are they worth it and which one?

chiefredwa

I was thinking of buying an exercising bike, a stationary one. Are they worth it for building up stamina and oxygen flow? And if so, is it better to get the one where the pedals force your legs frontward more so as not to put too much pressure on the knees. ( as going straight up and down on a regular bike ). PS I am not in the greatest shape...plus I do have some back issues. Thanks!!

Answer
get a recumbent stationary bike.
especially if you have a bad back.
i've had one for over a yr. and really like it.
i ride it about 1hr every day.
i bought a schwinn recumbent bike off of amazon. it was about the cheapest and i picked it because it had so many positive reviews even though i could afford a more expensive one. Sears has some pretty good choices too and does almost any sporting good store. test ride them in the store and see how they feel.
btw. i have a regular bike too. i use to ride it outside until i had a crash and cracked my helmet.
it's more fun but the stationary bike is safe.

what kind of road bike would you rec for 30-45 mins of exercise 3x per week?

jeff

Answer
The other answers you've received are excellent, but let me add my two cents. I, like you, ride several miles a day. I started riding regularly 13 years ago on a $200 hybrid. I loved the bike but eventually felt like I deserved something a little nicer. So, a few years ago I purchase a $600 Performance brand bike. Again, a good (steel frame) bike. But now I've come to a point where I want to ride more intensely and farther; so last weekend I purchased a Trek Pilot 5.2.

All of this is a long-winded way of recommending that you get the best bike you can afford up front, because eventually you may want to go farther, longer, and faster!

I have an exercise question.?

So, I weigh 190 pounds and I am 5 feet and 5 inches tall. I recently bought an exercise bike and I bike 16 miles a day about 15.4mph. Am I going to be able lose weight?? I also watch what I eat.

Answer
Limit your biking to 30 - 45 minutes each time.

1 - 30 mins - body uses stored glycogen
30 - 45 mins - body uses fats
45 mins onwards - body uses muscles

for energy.

recomendation for an exercise bike?

Fion

im looking for an exercise bike to exercise at home obviously.
but i dont know which one to get?
i want one for only losing fat calories and getting more fit. but theres some many different kinds in different positions like some has seats and some has only a bike seat where you need to sit upright.
im looking for one thats not too expensive, has adjustable seating (like height on the bike)and the one that has the monitor for your time ect.....

Answer
Not sure how much you're willing to spend. But I would highly recommend a recumbent exercise bike. They are so much more comfy than an upright bike so you can go for longer and push yourself more! They do take up a little more space, however they are definately worth it!

I myself use the Schwinn brand, they are very well known and build a quality product. Without spending an awful amount of money I would recommend the Schwinn 220. If you get into your exercise you can always upgrade later to a more extensive bike and just sell this one (they don't lose much value!)

Answer
A very popular and effective way to workout is by using a recumbent exercise bike. They are available in many different makes and models, ranging from no nonsense to high-tech. Finding the recumbent exercise bike that is right for you mainly depends on your ultimate training goal; from general fitness to sport specific training and anywhere in between.

For many, aerobic workouts are best performed on a recumbent exercise bike. There are many advantages to using a recumbent exercise bike such as providing a wider, more comfortable seat as well as a back rest. This more comfortable, upright position makes it easier to peddle longer. The most common complaint of exercise bike users is that the seat is just too uncomfortable. With a recumbent exercise bike this is a problem no more.

The most popular brand of recumbent exercise bike is made by Life Fitness and can be found in just about every gym or health club. Other manufacturers of the recumbent exercise bike include Tunturi, Schwinn and Star Trac.

Proper positioning on a recumbent exercise bike is easy to achieve. Seat length is the only adjustment to be made, making the recumbent exercise bike very user friendly. In order to check that you are properly positioned on the recumbent exercise bike, start with your feet on the peddles and both crank arms parallel with the floor. Look at the amount of bend in your knee (knee flexion).

The ideal position is to have just a slight bend in your knee joint. Improper positioning can create knee pain. Certain things to look for include pain in the front of the knee which is an indicator of the seat being positioned too close to the handlebars. If you are experiencing pain in the back of your knee it is a sign that the seat is positioned to far away from the handlebars. If you are using a recumbent exercise bike in a large fitness center simply ask one of the staff members to check your position.

Regardless of where you use your recumbent exercise bike it will be an important part of your fitness plan. Now you can comfortably peddle away while reading a book or watching TV and know that you are working towards a healthier you.

question about biking?

Malia

i have been using a bike at the gym lately, not a stationary, but the other kind where the pedals are more in front of you..
afer 20 or 30 minutes on the bike my right leg starts to hurt and the right half of my right foot starts to go numb..i have had problems with sciatica before if that might have anything to do with it..
but my question is, why is my leg/foot doing that and what can i do to make it stop..it doesnt hurt, but its really bothersome and interferes with my workouts..
thanks

Answer
I assume you mean a recumbent exercise bike - as link.

Sciatica and foot problems - yep, sounds linked. Chose your favourite health professional: physiotherapist, chiropractor, osteopath. I use a chiro.

Since all things are linked in the body, I've more recently been looking at Pilates. I had an initial induction at my gym - one-to-one - and will be joining a class sometime. I'd recommend not joining a class until you've been personally assessed, particularly because of your pre-existing condition.

Meanwhile, two simple things: How hard are you pedalling? Does reducing the resistance help? Also, how fast are you pedalling? Aim for 70 to 90 rpm, for which you'll need to use the straps on the pedals to hold your feet in place.

what exercise is best for burning calories?

Andy29Pand

I am top heavy so jogging and walking kinda hurts after a while my shoulders and lower back ive been told that the recumbent bike was good being so very top heavy and all

Answer
Walking is good if you are really heavy, just pick out 5 days a week and walk for about 30 minutes a day. Try to make it brisk. If you have access to any place with a lot of stairs, do some stair climbers, those are great at burning calories. And of course, you burn calories from just living through your basal metabolic rate. You can probably start off taking a lot of weight off by just eating healthy. Eat plenty of protein and fiber. Try to avoid excessive simple carbs such as regular sugars. Don't drink pop. Drink skim milk. Avoid anything fatty or deep fried. Start look at nutrition labels and judging what you eat. Try eating 500 calories less than what you usually do, if you do that, then you could lose up to 1-2lbs per week. Also, make sure to drink plenty of water. I hope this helps, and good luck!

Can I lose 40 pounds?

Q. I am 174 pounds and 5 foot 7.
Can I lose 40 pounds in 8 weeks if I ate the following...

Breakfast - apple
Lunch - carrots
Dinner - large salad or pita bread and hummus or peanut butter on a 100 calorie multigrain english muffin
Drink 100 oz of water.

And exercised in the following ways...

1 hour on a recumbent bike burning 400 calories
Walk 2.5 miles
500 crunches
150 girl push ups
90 sit-ups
Alternate between 1 minute run and 2 minute walk for 30 minutes on a treadmill.

NO answers about how this is unhealthy.

Answer
Here you go: This is from my own experience and what has worked for me. I have laid it all out for you so that others may have the success I have.

The perfect way to loose weight and monitor your progress is to use a calorie counter on a daily basis while you diet.

Energy In/Energy Out

Food Intake: 1,200 Per Day

One Pound equals 3,500 Calories

To loose one pound per day, You need to burn your food intake plus your one pound of fat

1,200 (intake) + 3,500 (Outtake) = 4,700 Calories Burn

You must burn at least 4,700 Calories everyday to loose one pound at least. It is very easy to go up and beyond 4,700 calories each day.

Best way to do this is to track your progress on a calorie counter monitor watch. If you do it by the numbers you can loose the weight. It is just a matter of changing the way you think about weight loss.

Once you start wearing your calorie counter you can see the numbers increase and you fill find yourself doing extra things in your day, like tapping your foot while waiting at the light in your car, chewing gum, singing out loud and so on onto of your workout routines. You begin to see that everything you do in your day contributes to the overall numbers needed to loose that pound.

Water Intake/Less Storage

Most people do not get enough water in their system. Water is your body's principal chemical component, comprising, on average, 60 to 80 percent of your weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. To determine if you are getting enough water use this simple formula.. Take your weight, for example 150 pounds and divide by 2. Take your answer which is 75 lbs and change it to ounces, in this case 75 ounces. That is how many ounces of water you need a day. Your body performs mostly on water. If you make sure you get enough water everyday your body will perform at top notch and your body will no longer have the cravings of junk food. You will have a better performing body system to help you work out and feel better thru out your day.

Good Food

My favorite things to eat:

Avocado Wraps

Simple: Low Carb Tortilla, Half Avocado sliced, alpha sprouts, lettuce, soy bacon...Just wrap it up and eat. You can vary the things you put inside so long as you keep it to approx 4 or 5 items. You want to make sure they are fresh, low calorie and filling. Avocado and mushrooms can replace meats in your meal and still have great taste.

Special K Cereals are fantastic. They have that sweetness that one craves and is so good for you. Calories are low. Great for even just dinner.

First thing in the morning...A Glass of Chocolate Milk. Yup!! Chocolate Milk. We all crave that "got to have" item in the morning. Milk is the best thing you can have for yourself while working out. The chocolate (and you can use Carnation Instant Milk for this but I simply use Nestle dry mix) will give you that sweet "snack" that you need. If you give your body a little bit of it and its in a control way, you will not crave sweets and junk the rest of the day.

Lean Cuisines

Fantastic food! Each meal is approx 180 t0 380 calories per box. So think about your calories. 1,200...You can still have several of these meals a day and still be under your intake requirements.

Itâs all about the numbers and watching what you take in and what you burn out. And you know what..If you go over your 1,200 mark for food intake...thatâs okay...you simple up your total calories burned for the day by what you took it. So long as you burn off the over all calories to be more than your food intake. Just make sure you stick too it so you can reach your weight loss goals.

Fruits and Veggies

All you want on the schedule listed below.
Bananas are my favorite. They are very filling and can make a meal all on their own.

____

Vitamins

My favorite is ONE A DAY WITH ENERGY...I am in love with this vitamin because I am just like everyone else who loves those quick fix energy drinks. But what people do not realize is that energy drinks can contain 120 to 440 calories in just ONE Can. If you think about it..That is HALF of your allowed calories for food intake. The best alternative I have found is One a day with energy vitamin. Easy to spot, it is packaged in a green label bottle. Just One vitamin a day will give you as much energy as approx. 1 1/2 cans of red bull...WITHOUT the calorie intake.
WoW..now your making progress already because you have made more room in your intake calories for actual healthy food.

_____

Soda/Carbonation

Carbonation is terrible for your system because it bloats your stomach. And when your stomach bloats, your jeans just don't fit. You can drop one pant size simply by NOT drinking any carbonated drinks all together..Take away the bloat and you have instantly just made it one pant size lower. Besides, Sodas dehydrate you and with that One a Day Vitamin, you won't need the Caffeine in the soda and it will also cut out those extra calories that you don't need.
So remove that soda and the energy drinks and just think how much calories you just instantly removed from your daily intake. I normally consume what...four sodas and two energy drinks in one day...that is a total of .... 900 calories. Of what??? Nothing...Those are horrible calories and calories that can be replaced by food which will fuel your body for your day and your workouts.

____

Your Body

Your body is like a computer. You must program your body to do what it is suppose to do so it won't crash and leave you with a virus. Your stomach is only the size of your fist. So think about it right now, Look at your hand and close your fist. Not very big is it. That is how much food you actually ONLY need to eat, each time you eat for every meal. If you eat anything more than that, you will stretch out your stomach which causes overeating and overweight.

What you need to do is eat every three hours, approx 5 to 7 times everyday around the same time. If you are always giving your body healthy and better food choices (the size of your fist) every three hours, your body will know you are giving it food. It will use that food properly. It will not go into starvation mode or store food away for later because it knows...it will get more in three hours. So what does your body do...it flushes everything out of your system because it doesn't need it.. Now it knows...you wont' forget about it and that food is on its way.

____

Walking Buddy

This is the best thing especially for woman. Get a walking buddy. One hour everyday. Just think about how much talking, venting and laughing two woman can do together while walking and yup, you guessed it...it just burns more calories and reduces your stress. You now are more relaxed because you can talk and free yourself of whatever is frustrating you while getting into shape.

Cheap excercise bike?

Brian

Can Anyone tell me where to get a cheap exercise bike? I'm looking for upright bike with Basic bare minimum features. Most of The big name brands have things like TVs and 500 different training settings, and seem to run several thousand dollars. I'm just looking for a basic reasonably priced upright bike with adjustable seat height, adjustable resistance, and distance readout for home use. Can any one guide me in this area? Thanks

Answer
Look on craigslist for used exercise equipment. There's a ton of 'em out there collecting dust or being used as a coat rack. Just be sure to get on it & physically try it for a few minutes to insure everything works properly.

To be quite honest...a REAL bicycle ridden in nice weather would be much more beneficial. On nasty weather days, set it up on an indoor bicycle trainer - such as this...
http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1125817_-1_400133__400133

I found mine on craigslist for a mere $65.00!

I do 10k/6.2 miles a day on my exercise bike. Is that enough to lose weight?

Jake

I know there is no clear cut answer to this question but if there are any serious riders out there, would you say that, typically, 10k each morning, 6 days a week, is a good cycling regime to lose weight, assuming that I stick to a fairly good diet and less than 2000 cals per day?

Resonate.

Answer
It's a good start but you want to increase the time and effort a little more each week. You body will adapt to the same exercise very quickly and burn less calories. Start out with an easy 10 min warm up and then start pedaling at 70-90 rpms with just enough resistance to get your heart rate to about 85% of max. On a real bike you burn about 35 calories per mile 22 per km. Exercise bikes are easier the the real thing so you will burn less. I would do 30 min and work up to a hour. If you are not sweating after 15 min you are not doing it right.

I have a bike in my trainer and try to do 35-45 min at a time on it. It gets too boring after that. I use to be able to get my heart rate to a little over max. I usually watch TV and crank it up during the commercials.

Your diet will do a lot more toward your weight loss then any amount of exercise. The exercise is good for your heart and to tone your legs and butt.

Which piece of exercise equipment is better?

empouse

I am not really interested in loosing weight, per say, but I'd like to slim down. I know I'd build lean muscle and burn fat, and I'm just looking for a machine to help me do that. I do go on the treadmill a couple times a week, but it's absolutely BORING. I'd like a compact exercise system that I can put in front of my T.V. and just exercise while watching TV or something!

I'm wondering how effective exercise bikes are. I found two that seem to get good reviews. One is an upright bike, and one is a recumbent. They both look comfortable to me, so I'm not concerned about which one is more comfortable.

Which one would be better for my desires? Neither? Please post some suggestions. Thanks!

Answer

what is the best exercise equipment to work out your legs and thighs? i have a exercise bike and elliptical machine which is best

Answer
Elliptical machine all the way! Although an exercise bike is a great machine if you are just trying to maintain the current state of your legs. If you are trying to tone up/strengthen/ or build the muscles in your legs then the elliptical is the way to go. You are not sitting down and that tests your legs much much more. It is a much more difficult exercise but you will be much happier if you are trying to improve your legs! Be sure to get a good machine though! The ones that give incline and resistence are the ones that are going to give you the best results. Two good brands are Procor and LifeFitness! Elliptical machines can also be used to maintain the current state of your legs as well! Hope this helped :)

What exercises are most effective towards weight loss?

Q. I'm in my teens and I have a small amount of unwanted flab which I want to get rid of before summer. What sort of exercises would you say work fastest and most effectively towards weight loss?

Answer
Hi Chloe;

Start the day off right. A nutritious breakfast will jump start your metabolism and give you energy to face the day ahead.

The key is to get active. Participate in team sports through school or community programs. Not for you? Try to walk, bike or rollerblade to school. How about jumping rope or even walking the dog? Helping around home such as vacuuming, washing the car can have aerobic benefits.

Drink lots of water. Avoid drinks high in calories and sugar like sodas, juices and other drinks out there.

One good tip in reducing your food intake, stop eating when you are already full. Walk away from the table.

As much as possible replace any "junk food" with fresh fruit and vegetables. Not only will you lose weight, you will also keep your heart and body healthy. Avoid quick fixes. Fad diets can deplete your body of calcium, Iron and other essential nutrients.

Just remember, when attempting to lose any weight, be sure you do it in the safest way possible. Before you know it, you will have met your goal before summer.

Can I ride an exercise bike to tone my hips and stomach?

Ivy

I am planning to purchase an exercise bike and I wonder can I ride it to tone my hips and stomach?

Answer
Calorie Burning
The exercise bike is effective in toning hips and stomach because it burns calories so quickly. In just 15 minutes, you can burn about 100 calories riding an exercise bike. This number varies with age, weight and your conditioning. Calorie burning is the number one way to tone any muscle group, and it can lead to substantial weight loss all over the body. The body stores fat in the hips and stomach. To tone them, you need to start losing this stored body fat. Vigorous exercise on the bike is one way to do this.

Weights and Toning
In addition, the exercise bike will use the hips and stomach as secondary muscles during the work out. The hip muscles are used slightly as legs are extended and pulled back in. The upper hips and stomach muscles are also used as the legs are brought up in the pedal rotation. This secondary use will add some tone to your hips and stomach. This combined with the calorie loss and fat burning from the exercise will lead to a toned stomach and hips.

Increasing Toning with the Bike
Adding weight or resistance to the bike is one way to increase muscle tone. Some exercise bikes have electronic settings that allow you to set modes. While hill climb mode might help you build your leg muscles, a calorie burning or cardio setting will increase the amount of fat you burn overall. That will lead to more toning of your entire body, including the hips and stomach.

I purchased an exercise bike on http://www.lavadeals.co.uk. It really works.
