Yahoo Answers depression?

Q. my mom thinks i'm depressed...but I don't think that I am. she thinks it's because I don't really do anything..that all I do is sleep in for a long time, I don't clean my room, and my ipod and Netflix have become my life. but, I have a lot of hw during the week and only sleep for 6 hours and I really like watching shows. idk, what do you guys think? do you think that i'm depressed?

Answer
One thing is true from which we can't escape; if we overindulge in anything at all we may suffer the consequences. Like sadness, if we're feeling sad for too long for whatever reason, or have experienced damaging emotional trauma and donât deal with it, we're in danger of inducing a little depression upon our selves. (Even flying high for too long can cause depression ~ living the high life, or becoming way too confounded and identified with material things - worldly goods - seeking happiness outside of our selves) - All material things are temporal and not to be identified with.

âMaterialism, attachment to things of the world, includes pride. Many religious people suffer from pride: taking pleasure or even delight in being good, or religious.â

You can't beat a good diet (Fruit and veg, something green), exercise, keeping the mind/brain exploratory which we need in order to discover and drive our goals, also to find a little enjoyment in life from time to time.
Negative mentality and emotions can give rise to an obfuscous mind - pondering on negative thoughts and bad ideas for far too long.

Procrastination can be a trait linked with a little depression, we can, and often do find reasons not to do things or change our selves, or even find a little enthusiasm.
Keep it real, avoid drink, drugs and smoking, and find some enjoyment in something once in a while.

using an exercise bike?

i want to buy an exercise bike, the upright one not the one where you sit down, is it worth it to buy to do cardio? does it tone your legs too much?

Answer
Exercise is really unnecessary if you think about it. Just go through your everyday actions and you will get all of the exercise you need. For example, all Harold does these days is help fools on Yahoo Answers and snipe the stinkin' Mexicans to prevent them to reach his tower in Budapest, unless they are there to do cheap labor. So really the only thing he needs to exercise are his fingers, which are exercised by doing those very actions.

Sounds like all you need to do is keep walking. Don't let nobody slow you down. Not even those sixth graders that throw ice chunks at your dome.

Exercise bike with table/desk?

Travis Bar

I'm looking in to getting a stationary exercise bike and I would like to get one with some sort of table so I can work on my laptop at the same time. I'll be more inclined to use the bike If I'm able to do homework at the same time. Are there exercise bikes that have these, or can I add one on a bike without one? Could anyone recommend an affordable bike like this? Or are there any tables that I could buy that would serve this purpose?

Answer
So, you just want to be able to pedal as you work?

There are small units that fit under a desk that will achieve just what you want. Here's one example http://www.bing.com/shopping/sunny-mini-cycle-arm-and-leg-exercise-machine/p/7AD1FB3E57565A155003?q=office+exercise+equipment&lpq=office%20exercise%20equipment&FORM=HURE but there are others.

No matter what you get, don't buy the cheapest thing you can find. I recommend one that does have resistance, but NOT magnetic resistance. This is because magnetic resistance is based on the speed of pedalling and I am again assuming you don't want to achieve 90 to 150 rpm while working.

Answer
You need to do aerobic exercise - walking, running, jogging, biking, swimming. Also include some strength training.

Weight loss is an overall process and there are no magic answers. Pay no attention to weight loss supplements and pills and all the latest fads. You need to think about many factors but most of them are related to issues we've known about for a very long time. There are many sensible things you can do that will make a tremendous difference over the long term if you need to lose weight. It can be done in a healthy way. This is what has worked for me.

Keeping a food journal really does help. It will give you a much better sense of how much you are eating, and when, and why.

Make a few additional small changes - walk everywhere, always use stairs instead of elevators, walk on escalators, get up and move around at least once an hour if your work or your life in general is sedentary, walk every day, use a pedometer. Walking 10,000 steps a day is a really good idea. Build up to a long brisk walk everyday, or most days. Be more active and watch less TV and spend less time on the computer. Buy one piece of exercise equipment to have at home and be strict with yourself about using it. Sometimes you can find mini-steppers or exercise bikes at second hand stores and thrift stores for just a few dollars.

Start a weight lifting routine. Join a gym. Possibly you can find one that has someone who specializes in weight lifting programs for beginners. Weight lifting will increase your metabolism as well as improve posture and appearance overall. Even if you can't get to the gym you can work out at home using things around the house. Invest in a good weight training book. The Dummies series actually has a good one.

In terms of diet, cut out or reduce things like junk food, pop, fat, fast food. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish. Particularly if you choose a vegetarian lifestyle include natural peanut butter, hummus, dried fruit and nuts. Pay close attention to getting the nutrients your body needs to be healthy.

Make your portion sizes smaller. Use a smaller plate - in our society we have become accustomed to thinking that we need a large plate of food at every meal, and we don't. About quarter of your plate of food should be protein and at least half of it should be veggies.

Learn to count calories. At your current weight and activity level, you may possibly need about 2000 calories or more to maintain your current weight. So you will lose weight at a reasonable and healthy rate if you cut back to about 1600 or 1700 calories a day.

Eat small amounts frequently, rather than three large meals. Never skip breakfast. Include some protein in your breakfast. It will help get you through the day.

Drink plenty of water, at least 8 big glasses of water a day, and more if it is very hot, if you sweat a lot, or if you are exercising intensely, and eliminate fruit juices. Fruit juices have too many calories, so get your vitamins from fresh fruit, not the juice. You will begin to see changes in your body.

Vary your routines. Don't eat the same number of calories every day (vary your calories from 1400 a day to 1900 or 2000 some days), eat a variety of foods, and do different kinds and amounts of exercise. You will lose weight much more efficiently if you mix things up from time to time so that your body doesn't adjust to any one routine.

An area that many people overlook is getting enough sleep. You are much more likely to overeat or to binge eat if you are tired and not well rested, so get enough sleep.

What is a good exercise bike?

baminn88

I am looking to get back into shape and want to get a bike.My bf would also be using it and he is already in shape so i need something that would be a challenge for him as well

Answer
Get a spin bike something like this will work. The problem with stationary bikes is the boredom, a 30 min routine feels like hours. Get a real bike and get on the road or rail trails and have a lot more fun. You can always put the bike on a trainer in the winter or when the weather gets bad.

Do regular bicycle pedals fit exercise bikes?

kbmoose1

I have a Proform Tour De France and the left pedal is bad. They are sending me a new pedal, but it might be 2-3 weeks before it arrives.

I wonder if a regular pedal from my local bicycle shop would fit? Short of buying a pedal and trying it, how can I find out? (I did a web search and got no answer. Tried several combinations, all I got was websites selling the entire stationary bike.)

Answer
Yes pedals are standard. You need to figure out if they are 1/2" or 9/16". The left one has left handed threads. Take a 15 mm wrench and remove it.

The ProForm should use a 9/16" pedal. They look like a Wellgo pedal with toe clips.

Edit:
All the pedals they show as accessories on the ProForm site are 9/16" clipless. I would go ahead and buy SPD pedals and shoes.

Get the shoes at the local bike shop and pedals online.

Exercising 5 mins every hour?

Cammi T

I work at a computer all day. I was thinking about hopping on an exercise bike for 5 minutes every hour. Is this pointless or a good idea?
I commute by bike (around 30 minutes each way) and go for longer rides on the weekend, so I do do more sustained cardio. I just want to know if doing this as well is pointless.

Answer
Gee Cammi, it looks like you've got all possible choices for your answer. I also disagree with Gerda, and I both agree and disagree with Mark. Any exercise your do, provided it's done in moderation, is beneficial. That's especially true if you have a sedentary job like working at a desk all day. Studies have shown that short intense workouts, such as mark refers to, are almost as beneficial if considered cumulatively, as if done continuously. Getting up and exercising is an excellent idea. It's not only healthful, but it will actually improve your job performance. I'm an old guy who's been working out all of my life. I'm told I look 20 years younger than I am. I don't know about that, but I do know that I feel fine physically and am considering bicycling ~ 1000 miles along the southern coast of Australia this Winter. It should be fun. I cycled 4250 miles alone across the U.S. when I was 42 and I didn't walk one hill; it took me 42 days and that was on a bike weighing between 78 to 80 lbs. depending upon how much water I was carrying; my resting heart rate is ~ 49. Keep on cycling!!

Healthy diet and exercise plan please?

Q. My stats:
Height: 5'6"
Heighest weight: 144 lbs
Lowest weight: 115 lbs
Current weight: 134.8 lbs
Goal weight: 110 lbs
Age: 14, I start high school in September.

I don't generally eat meat on a daily basis, and I try to stay away from dairy and eggs. But I do eat chicken noodle soup once in a while, as well as eat yogurt. I have a binge eating problem so I gained about 20 lbs which I'm not happy about, so I want to lose about 25 healthily because at 115 I honestly wasn't quite as slim as I'd like to be. Also, I tend to go by RMR instead of BMR because I feel it's more accurate. At home I have a treadmill, weighted hula hoop, exercise bike and rowing machine, as well as free weights. So nothing's off limits.
To clear a few things up: I was 115 lbs in January, after losing 29. Then I couldn't stop binging, and I was eating a healthy 1200 calories a day, plus occasional exercise. I was not skipping meals. I get low sodium soup, and I said I eat it occasionally, no more than once a week. Skim milk and eggs I choose not to eat because 1) I dont like eggs and 2) I've read that the human body responds to animal products as if they were poison, and i would rather not risk that. So I generally don't eat meat, and now it makes me feel sick when I eat too much of it.

Answer
135 is definitely in a healthy weight range, and if you have an average build structure, your magic target should be 127 to 131, especially with exercise that strengthens muscles. Binge eating is typically caused by skipping meals.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AsrfLEhBF9.sfMSSe1rquH_ty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20120114181657AA92X8l
Ideal weight as a reliable number set, foods based on DASH diet for heart health, and lookup tables and eating tips.
You can also review the glycemic index information, proven accurate independently at Duke University and in Australia.: http://www.lipid.org/education/courses/ccrr/assets/DukeLipidClinicLowGlycemicDiet.pdf
Calories burned by exercise is here:
http://www.nutristrategy.com/caloriesburned.htm
And at your weight, there should be minimal excess water, so close to 3,500 calories per pound. With an exercise plan and goal of weight loss, estimate 1400 to 1600 calories per day in a variety of food. My guess is that the weight has fluctuated, and you think back to when you were shorter, but now that you are 5'6" tall, your weight should be higher to accommodate.
Skim milk is healthy. Egg whites are healthy. Chicken noodle soup as a prepared can or packet is much too high in sodium. Fish and white meat chicken are high quality proteins. Which exercise you do is not as important as the time it is done for. Anything that is growing muscle and bone raises your weight target.

I am looking for a recumbant exercise bike afer knee surgery and welcome opinions!?

Marks

I tried the R1 an R3 made by Life Fitness but when I pedal my foot hits the rod between the bike and the pedal. I am 6'1" and also bowlegged. The XBR55 by Spirit Fitness is not quite as smooth as the R1 or R3, but doesn't have the above problem. It is also less expensive.

Spirit Fitness claims the following advantage:

"Through research performed with a leading sports scientist and physical rehabilitation expert,
Spirit engineering has developed a breakthrough in pedal design. Typical stationary exercise bikes
are wider than a normal road bike. The reason is to allow for the braking mechanism, pulleys,
drive components and beauty covers. Since the bike is wider, so is the distance between the
pedals; this width between the pedals is called the Q factor.
Spirit has designed our pedal system so the Q factor is the smallest in the industry, but we did not
stop there. We have also custom designed and tooled a new pedal that provides a two degree
inward tilt to compensate for the Q factor not being perfect. Having a small Q factor in addition to
the two-degree inward tilt of the pedals puts the user into a biomechanical neutral alignment. This
means that your feet, ankles, knees and hips are lined up properly ensuring a comfortable
workout."

Would this be good for someone who is tall and bowlegged or is this the opposite of what I should be looking for? If so, would it be better to purchase the Life Fitness and just place my feet on the outer side of the pedals (or would this create unnatural strain?) Thanks!!

Answer
Why only look at recumbent exercise bikes? There is no particular reason to concentrate on this type of bike unless you have back problems. You might want to talk to someone who specializes in bike fitting to assess your needs on a bicycle. Q factor is well known to those who ride bicycles. It is very easy to achieve a low q factor on an upright stationary bike, but that is not the only issue in bike fitting. The position your feet assume on the pedal is also important. If you pedal toes out the way you fit yourself is not the same as if you pedal toes in. The absolute best option is a well fitted bicycle on a trainer. Bicycles can be custom fitted much better than any exercise bike. Once you buy the bike, you can buy a trainer to use it on. The beauty of this arrangement is that you can also ride the bicycle outdoors on the road which is a much more interesting way to train

Got a bruised knee cap. Shoould I stay off the exercise bike?

Hurt it playin roller hockey. I ran into the goal tender's whole body and tripped over him at the knees. Its got a tender sensation in the back of my knee and a bruise on the cap itself. Doesn't hurt to walk on. Its been 2 days and I have a game next sunday. I don't know if i should keep from exercising longer.

Answer
If it is just a superficial bruise over your knee cap, you should be fine. But if it hurts to sit down (take weight off your knee) and flex and extend it, I'd ice it and stay away from vigorous exercise for a couple of days. This could mean you actually bruised the bone or perhaps even fractured it (of course, you'd be in serious pain and probably would have gone to the doctor had you fractured it). However, if it does not hurt to bike, nor is the joint stiff (from swelling), go ahead with it.

The tender sensation on the back of your knee is a little worrisome, but if you are more concerned about the knee cap, I am sure you will be fine. It just all depends on how exactly you fell. In any case, ice, rest, and elevation will speed up recovery.

Is a exercise bike good exercise for 1.5 hours a day?

liteonfire

Answer
If you are doing the HIIT routine then 20 minutes will work. If you are just doing regular cardio with the proper heart rate then you should do at least 30 minutes to no more than an hour.

if i use the exercise bike 1-2 hours a day and eat healthyer will i lose whieght ?

Q. i need to lose whieght and was wondering if use an exercise bike for like an hour a day and eat better will i lose wheight all around my body

Answer
The easiest way to lose weight is to eat less. Cut back a little each day and watch what you eat. 1-2 hours a day on the exercise bike will definitely help if you can keep it up every day. It's much easier to reduce your food intake then to work it off later.

What is a better workout, an exercise bike or an elliptical machine?

thelma s

I need to lose weight around my belly and hip/thigh areas. Running is too boring for me.

Answer
I know what you mean, running is really boring for me too. I admire the ones who can do it, but it's not for me either.
You'll get a good workout on either one. The bike will give you incredible legs, it will get your heart in shape, and you'll burn fat too. The elliptical machine might be best for the areas you want to work on. You might want to alternate the elliptical with the bike, as to keep from getting bored. I can tell you, after a week of the elliptical you'll want to do some other things!
I'd suggest too, some classes, get a class schedule and see what's offered, they offer some great ones now at your local gym. Kickboxing, tae bo, belly dancing, the works! You can also get some dvd's to do at home on the days you don't want to do the elliptical or the bike, this would be even better, to mix it up and do it all.
Any and all of the above will work for these areas, be prepared to lose everywhere too, as spot reducing is a myth! Hope this helps.....

which provides the better workout, treadmill, exercise bike or the elliptical?

Answer
treadmill will be the best, then bike, then elliptical, but a variation of all 3 is even better than any one

How can I make exercise a part of my life? I am unfit yet underweight?

Q. I am 18, Female, 5"2 and 119 pounds. I do no exercise, apart from walking, but even this isnt being active for the purpose of being active. I tried to ride my friends bike today and got out of breath in less than a minute!
My question is, how can I ease myself into an exercise regime? I dont have a bike or any exercise equipment, and there are no sports clubs I can join. Any help appreciated

Answer
You are not underweight. Your BMI (body mass index) is 21.8, which is in the normal range.
You can start off by doing light exercise at home.

Walking would be good as well.

What is considered a moderate and vigorous speed on stationary bike?

JustAGirl1

I am trying to accurately log my calories.

What is the approximate MPH on a stationary exercise bike to be considered 'moderate'? What about 'vigorous'?

I am 218 lbs, 5'8. When I put that into the livestrong website i get '1,038 calories burned per hour.' at a vigorous speed.

I typically only bike 5 miles at a time, getting done in 17 minutes. Is this moderate or vigorous?

Answer
5 miles is an awful long time and effort, that's pretty good. In your case, it might be vigorous but you know your own body. Probably have been doing this for quite a while.

But yes, it helps you if you do it longer and faster. There pretty much reps, you can say. Having a slow, calm workout does help but a faster and longer workout will improve your stamina and durability, it has many benefits. That's why they say when you jog or run for example, to keep doing it at a pace and a good amount of time because you burn more calories. Same thing as biking, for example.

Try adding pressure to the handles and the movements on your bike, increase that torque. That's pretty much the next level, that will definitely help you. But in your case, I'd say that's pretty good.
