Stationary Bike?! * quick Question**?

Sarah

Is a Stationary Bike, really good for cardio? I live in Florida and it is just to hot and nasty to be outside much, unless in the pool. I just bought the Bow Flex and I need to add some Cardio into my workouts.... Would a Stationary Bike be a good buy?

Answer
I highly recommend Schwinn 230 Recumbent Exercise Bike

I found most of the reviews on the Schwinn 230 recumbent bike to be spot on!
- UPS deliver was prompt but the packaging was damaged - the box was ripped open. Fortunately, no damage to the bike and no parts lost.
- Took about 2 hours to unpack and assemble. My husband helped me carry the base of the bike from the garage into the basement, and 90 minutes later I plugged the bike in and it worked perfectly. I did all the assembly myself with the tools provided.
- LCD panel works fine in our lighting. Glad I didn't spend the extra to upgrade to the back-lit panel.
- The bike is quiet, smooth, stable, and comfortable. So nice to use a product that delights!
- I'm 5'4", and have no problem reaching the pedals.
- And yes, the seat wobbles just a bit. Not an issue, as much of the exercise equipment I've used has the same behavior.
So far, I really like this bike.

I bought it with free shipping from...

Hope you find your favorite. Good Luck!

Stationary exercise bike stand for mountain bike?

Bryan Niel

Does anyone know of a relatively inexpensive indoor stationary bike stand for a MOUNTAIN BIKE that is also pretty quiet?

I am not trying to spend too much over $100.

I recently had back surgery and can my surgeon suggested a stationary bike for rehab (among other things). I live in an apartment with opionated neighbors, and want to get fit without arguments.

Answer
I have a Bell Motivator that I use with a Walmart Mountain bike that has over 6.000 miles on it. You need to change the rear tire to something like a Kenda Kross slick so that it runs smooth and quite. Look around for a used on on the local ebay or Craig's list you may get lucky. You want a magnetic or fluid drive model.

Replace both tires and your bike will ride a lot better on the road.

why have no prisons installed giant hamster wheels in cells for prisoners to produce energy on? ?

klembok

like, so the prisoners can reduce their sentence maybe?

Answer
That is a great idea!

If you ever watched the LEXX Sci Fi series, you'll know that the air bellows on the "Fire" planet were operated by prisoners.

In the sci-fi television series LEXX, the fictional planet "Fire" is the afterlife for all evil souls, and the location for much of Season 3. It shares a tight mutual orbit and an atmosphere with the Planet Water, which is the afterlife for all good souls. The souls on Water and Fire have no memory of how they arrived there; they simply "woke up" there one day. The nature and names of "Fire" and "Water" may be a nod to both Philip José Farmer's Riverworld and Robert L. Forward's Rocheworld.

Fire is ruled by Prince, a man with supernatural powers who may be the Satan or the embodiment of Death. Prince controls certain aspects of Fire such as the ability to reincarnate in whatever Form he wishes (He reincarantes as a Kai look-alike) and having influence over the queue in which evil souls wait to be reincarnated onto Fire (after the destruction of the Light Universe in the struggle with Mantrid at the end of Season Two there are too many evil souls for them to all reincarnate on Fire at the same time). Other leaders on Fire wage constant war against Prince; these include Duke, who has lesser supernatural powers, and Queen, who is the reincarnation of the cannibal warlord Giggerota from Season 1. The other major named character on Fire is Priest, Prince's cowardy lackey.

Fire is an inhospitable planet, with its entire surface covered in desert and open seas of lava. Even when the sun beats down mercilessly on the desert sands, the ground below is hotter still than the sky above. Fire is said to have no water of its own, and people on the open sands during daylight quickly die. The inhabitants of Fire live in enormously tall towers, each of which is a single city. These provide them shade from the sun and possibly keep them cooler by raising them away from the planet's warm surface. Prince's city, Princetown, is cooled by an enormous bellows powered by damned souls forced to pedal on exercise bikes attached to Guillotines.

The inhabitants of Fire frequently raid Water by traveling there in hot air balloons through the planets' shared atmosphere, an idea floated in Bob Shaw's novels. They do this partly to collect water, and partly to sadistically kill the good souls on Water. But however many times Prince's armies kill all the inhabitants of Water, he and the other rulers of Fire continuously fight amongst themselves until they undermine their rule of the paradise planet and are once more confined to their own tormenting planet. In addition, the inhabitants of Water simply reincarnate and the war continues. For this reason, Prince is excited when the Lexx appears, with the potential to finally destroy Water.

Fire is destroyed by the Lexx under the command of Xev at the end of Season 3. This act frees all the damned souls of Fire, and also frees Prince's spirit from his body. Prince then possesses the Lexx and destroys Water, finally ending his war. As the Lexx begins to search for the nearest planet to feed on, it is revealed that Fire and Water were in the Earth's solar system, in the same orbit as Earth but on the opposite side of the Sun in the L3 Lagrangian point.

If a dead body was left to float in the outer space, would it decompose?

or will it float forever?

Answer
Hi Johnny B,

On Earth, or inside the International Space Station (ISS), five general stages are used to describe the process of decomposition: Fresh, Bloat, Active and Advanced Decay, and Dry/Remains. The general stages of decomposition are coupled with two stages of chemical decomposition: autolysis and putrefaction. These two stages contribute to the chemical process of decomposition, which breaks down the main components of the body.

In outer space, the decomposition process would occur to some extent, but it would stop before very long, fast forwarding from Fresh to Dry/Remains. Oxygen present in the body would be quickly depleted by the aerobic microorganisms found within, creating an ideal environment for the proliferation of anaerobic microorganisms. Anaerobic microbes, originating in the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory system, would begin to transform carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, to yield organic acids (propionic acid, lactic acid) and gases (methane, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia). This process of microbial proliferation within a body is referred to as putrefaction.

However, the anaerobic microbes, exposed to the extremes of low temperature and radiation in space, would not have enough energy available to keep on thriving for all that long. Most especially, they would tend to survive only inside the body, leaving the skin more or less untouched (this would have the strange effect of rotting much of the bodyâs insides while leaving almost no visible mark of decomposition on the body's surface). The human body is 64% water, and exposed to the hard vacuum of outer space, liquids would evaporate, eventually leaving the body completely dry and desiccated. Once things got too nasty for the anaerobic microbes, some of them would go into a dormant state, which unfortunately for them would last more or less forever, resulting in their eventual deaths.

Depending on where the body is in the Universe, it might also be broken up by astrophysical processes. In low Earth orbit (the domain of the ISS, and until recently, the Space Shuttle), the extremely tenuous atmosphere would slow a corpseâs orbital velocity, eventually de-orbiting it, whereupon it would burn up on re-entry. If it were in solar orbit in the inner Solar System, the Sun's energy would cause the body to eventually break apart through the effects of radiation, solar wind and micrometeoroid impacts (this would also kill all the microbes somewhat sooner than would otherwise be the case). Out in interstellar or intergalactic space, on the other hand, a frozen and desiccated corpse could conceivably last in a recognizable form for millions of years.

Hope thatâs broadened your understanding,

Share and Enjoy, Peace-&-Love, Dalinian

Exercise Bikes?

Q. I'm thinking about buying an exercise bike. What is better? Upright or recumbent? Which one will help me burn more calories? Will there be a big difference if I don't get one with the movable bars on the arm handles? I'm just lost. Please help. Thanks :)

Answer
I put my regular bike on a track stand with magnetic resistance unit. You can find them at Performance Bike for under $100 for the basic version (what I have).

It takes up hardly any space once I take the bike off.

Calories? the harder you go, the more you burn. Upright vs. recumbent is all a matter of taste and comfort. Recumbent might be a little better if you like to read or play video games while you ride. Bear in mind that if you're going easy enough to read, you're not burning a whole lot of calories.

using an exercise bike?

i want to buy an exercise bike, the upright one not the one where you sit down, is it worth it to buy to do cardio? does it tone your legs too much?

Answer
Exercise is really unnecessary if you think about it. Just go through your everyday actions and you will get all of the exercise you need. For example, all Harold does these days is help fools on Yahoo Answers and snipe the stinkin' Mexicans to prevent them to reach his tower in Budapest, unless they are there to do cheap labor. So really the only thing he needs to exercise are his fingers, which are exercised by doing those very actions.

Sounds like all you need to do is keep walking. Don't let nobody slow you down. Not even those sixth graders that throw ice chunks at your dome.

Question about Schwinn 430 Elliptical machine, elliptical machines in general..?

MT

I am interested in buying an elliptical machine, I've been doing a lot of research, and it seems that the Schwinn 430 is the best buy in it's price range. I'm not too concerned with extra features, my biggest concern is the weight capacity. Thee 430's weight capacity is 275lbs and I weigh 270. I am worried I weigh too close to the weight limit, so I don't know if I should get it? Also, any advice about getting a different elliptical? Be specific please. Price range less than $900.

Answer
Ellipticals are a bad idea in general. If you want something effective, go for a rowing machine: it's a full-body workout for cardio. If that's too intimidating an idea (they can be tough) then the next best bet is a recumbent exercise bike. (Comfortable seating position, good workout on the legs, pretty good cardio workout.) If that's out, then a treadmill is still better. Get one with the capability for a good incline - you can get a decent cardio workout with a comfortable walking pace (2.5-3mph) if the incline is high enough.
The thing is, ellipticals don't do much for you... the motion is not something that translates into any normal activity, and the machine does much of the work - this is why people (who are in horrible shape and can't last a half hour on any other machine) can do 2 hours on an elliptical: it's not getting them to do anything.

How 2 keep the habit? & What cardio exercises do you like? Why?

deva s

I exercise sporadically (can do a few times a week for a few weeks then go days or weeks without & start the cycle again). I want to exercise almost daily (at least 5 times a week) to get my heart into shape but the excuses keep coming up.
Don't like 2 exercise in public by self (feel embarrassed) and don't know anyone 2 workout with like this, not much room in the house 2 do a lot (but I do exercise 2 fit tv at times), can't do at night when there's a free class at a local church (have other obligations can't get out of), don't have much money for gym membership (which would be the best thing for me I think, especially if it's competitive with encouragement). I live in a country-hick type city where I don't think it would be safe on the streets & there's not much going on exercise wise.
Motivated by 90s+ dance music (when I used to be really into exercise). I like dancing, gymnastics, etc. but there's no room for the kind I like. Are there free/cheap clubs out there? Suggestions?

Answer
Simply buy a home fitness equipment and work on it like 45 min a session every other day.

Your money will be well spent, you just do your aerobics in private...

If you do it regularly, it becomes a habit, if it's a habit, you don't have to keep it, habits are hard to break otherwise it's not called a habit... LOL

Aerobic classes (alternatively, dance to a DVD)
Biking (outdoors... not your cup of tea)
Biking (indoors, also called spinning)
Dancing (even to the radio!)
Jogging (outside or on the treadmill, or brisk walking)
Stairmaster (or running up and down stairs but make sure the stairs are "safe" for this purpose)
Running (outside or on the treadmill)
Rowing (indoor or on the river)
Skipping (jumping rope) â¦

...and there are many others... just be sure to start slowly and work your goal up to 20-30 minutes 3 days a week [it is necessary to keep your heart rate up, which helps burn stored fat] each day for whatever exercise you choose. In order to get the most benefit and the most fat loss, it is important to keep up the activity for at least 20-30 minutes

AND keep your heart rate up...REMEMBER YOUR TARGET HEART RATE IS 220 [minus] (Your Age) = Target Heart Rate [This number is the highest rate your heart should beat per minute during intense exercise...

However, you should try to keep your heart rate around 70-80% of that number during the whole workout]...

â¦you can do it, just give yourself some time. It does take time! Make sure you keep your diet in check too!"

How to use a stationary bike?

in school i use a stationary bike and i am looking to loose some fat. how do i use my 35 minutes a day w, the bike? low or high resistance? when i stand, sit, etc..

Answer
You want to do a 10 min warm up at a easy resistance. After the warm up set the resistance to where you can still talk but not sing. You want to keep you cadence at 70-90 rpm's with a lite pressure on the pedals. If you need to catch your breath or your legs start to hurt reduce the resistance to recover but keep pedaling. You can also do interval training where you can stand and pedal for a short period of time then drop back to recover.

A high cadence with a lite pressure on the pedals will use your slow twitch muscles that use fat as a fuel. Pedaling slow and mashing on the pedals will use fast twitch muscles that use glycogen as a fuel and will wear out you legs quickly.

You can work in some slower cadence mashing on the pedals into your workout if you like. It will work your hamstring and gluts a little more.

max calories burned from stationary bikes?

xParadox

I'm using my stationary bike as my means for cardio exercising and I was wondering there were general rules as to the best ways to burn more calories. Like, I'm sure more resistance burns more calories, as does pedaling faster, but would it be better to pedal at a decent speed with lots of resistance or to pedal faster at moderate resistance? Is it a good idea to wear ankle weights (and if so, how does this factor in to the weight loss equation - less or more important than the other two factors, or relatively the same?) I'm just wondering what the best kind of levels are for achieving maximum results. Thank you very much!

Answer
You want to use a heart rate monitor to keep you in the fat burning zone. You can get them for as little as $33.

Start out with a easy 10 min warm up ride, it will help with muscle pain and allow you to ride much longer. After the warm up you want to pedal at 70-90 rpm's with just enough resistance to get your heart rate to the 70-80% of max. That is you fat burning zone. You want to stay at that level as long as you can. Start with 20 min workouts and work up to 45-60 min. You should be sweating after the first 15 min or so if you are doing it right.

Once you are doing 30 min rides or more you can do interval training where you go hard for 30-90 seconds and then drop back to recover. Once you recover do it again. I liked to do the last 5 min or so at a pace that gets my heart rate to 90% or more. Make sure you drop back and recover before you quit.

Is it realistic to try biking everywhere in Dallas, TX?

Pretty much everywhere I go is within 10 miles (work, school, best friend, etc.).
I'm sick of sitting on my a-s all day / driving everywhere, and I really want to get some exercise without the embarrassing gym.

But is this even realistic? My dad says the probable outcome is my getting killed by a car, and my mom agrees. I don't know anyone else who does this in a big city...

Any help?

Answer
I mean I don't know how biking is in Dallas, but I live in Chicago and it's very possible to do that here.

Where to stay in Dallas, Texas?

Crystal G

Thinking of relocating to Dallas, TX from Wisconsin (Milwaukee/Madison area). We are going to visit in March. Where is the best area to stay to get a feel of the city? We are in our mid to late twenties, no kids (for now...plan on having some soon), and like to eat, shop, exercise, etc. Where is the place to live if plan on buying a home? Thanks

Answer
I would suggest staying in Addison. It's a very lively city, just outside of Dallas. Lots or restaurants and bars, and you're close to a couple of malls (Galleria and Northpark). Addison is also close enough to downtown Dallas, that you can venture there and see what there is to do. I would also look around White Rock Lake if you like to be active, there are bike/walking trails. The only thing I agree with the above poster about is the streets. Most cities in Texas are not on a grid system, and therefore it can get a little confusing. So just make sure you've got a good gps system or navigation on your phone.

Exercising Bikes. Are they worth it and which one?

chiefredwa

I was thinking of buying an exercising bike, a stationary one. Are they worth it for building up stamina and oxygen flow? And if so, is it better to get the one where the pedals force your legs frontward more so as not to put too much pressure on the knees. ( as going straight up and down on a regular bike ). PS I am not in the greatest shape...plus I do have some back issues. Thanks!!

Answer
get a recumbent stationary bike.
especially if you have a bad back.
i've had one for over a yr. and really like it.
i ride it about 1hr every day.
i bought a schwinn recumbent bike off of amazon. it was about the cheapest and i picked it because it had so many positive reviews even though i could afford a more expensive one. Sears has some pretty good choices too and does almost any sporting good store. test ride them in the store and see how they feel.
btw. i have a regular bike too. i use to ride it outside until i had a crash and cracked my helmet.
it's more fun but the stationary bike is safe.

Does anyone know where I can find reviews on exercise recumbent bikes? Or recommend one?

costlyprin

I have been looking at the Edge 440 recumbent exercise bike, but cannot find any information on how good they are. I haven't heard of Edge before and wonder if anyone has anything made by them or where I might be able to go online to find any reviews on it.
Also if someone has one that they would like to recommend. It is going to be a gift for my father who is approx 6'2" with long legs so the seat needs to be quite adjustable. Thanks

Answer
There is one review listed on amazon.com for the Edge 440.
http://www.amazon.com/Edge-440r-Magnetic-Recumbent-Bike/dp/B0006624Y8
There are other Edge products that have more reviews you may want to read those over.
roadbikereview.com has reviews on trainers, but I didn't see the one you listed.
