Exercise bikes?

:]

Can exercise bikes tone your stomach up aswell as your legs? (even just a little bit, if i stand up and pedal.)
How long should I cycle on it a day?
How many calories should I burn with it?
What does "odo" mean, it says it on the little screen but I have no clue what it means?
Thanks
xx

Answer
The stomach gets some work on a road bike because you move around more. Not much on an exercise bike. If you stand up that is good, but probably won't be that effective. Do some ab exercises afterwords.

Any time on your exercise bike is good. 10-12 minutes helps. 20-30 minutes provides a nice rate of improvement. Longer than that is boring and takes disipline.

The calories burned depends on your lean body size, intensity, and duration of the bike ride.

If you bike vigorously for 20-30 minutes you are probably burning something like 200 calories.

Odo is short for odometer. That measures distance.

is an exercise bike a good way to lose weight with a diet i mean how long are you meant to be on it in a day?

Answer
An exercise bike is a good way to lose weight. Start small like 10 mins and gradually work up to an hour. I'd also recommend mixing it up with jogging, the exercise bike will get pretty boring so running will be a nice change every few days.

Question about exercise bike?

Miranda

I'm trying to lose 10 lbs of fat in 1-2 months.
I heard the exercise bike can help but does it actually burn fat WITHOUT creating muscle? I don't want muscular thighs. I'm trying to look lean. If the bike does cause your thighs to get muscular and bulky, what exercise can I do for lean thighs?

Answer
It's hard to target weight loss; you can target muscle building, but the fat comes off from wherever it feels like.

So, go ahead and bike -you'll look (and be) toned, not fatty, which is good. It's highly unlikely you'll get enough muscle to be bulky.
But if you're really worried about it, just vary your workout routine a bit; try doing stretch and isomorphic workouts sometimes, or lift weights (again, if you're a woman [which I assume you are because you don't want muscle] it's actually really really hard to gain enough muscle to be bulky), or try a different full-body workout like swimming.

Bike question?

Q. Ok I'm going to start riding my bike again for exercise. I wonder will I look wierd. Because the bike is a bike I bought when I was 12 and its flourescent pink with big white tires. I pulled off as many of the decals as I could. I;m 18 and I don't know if it will look wierd.

Also is it good exercize. Theres a big bike trail I can ride on. How many calories do you lose and where do you lose weight the most. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Cycling is an excellent form of exercise. It is low impact on the knees and the body.

The main thing is does the bike still fit you. A bike that is too small can cause damage to your knees. Also if the bike is too small for you, you may expend more energy than you really should.

Cycling is a good way to burn calories, but it is not the highest way to burn calories. Depending on how hard you push your self, and how fast you go on the trail, determines how much calories you will loose. Generally, the longer and harder you ride, the more calories you will burn. But that applies to any form of exercise.

You will not lose weight in one particular area. The body just doesn't work that way As you burn more calories than you are consuming, you will burn fat from all over the body.

The main thing is to get your metabolism going, on a regular basis, and as early in the day as possible.

What you will notice is that your legs are getting more toned and developed. The muscles will develop better.

If you spend a lot of time on the bike, and doing hard work outs, you will lose fat, but because muscle is heavier than fat, you may gain weight. However, because you are losing fat, you will notice the muscles show better, and will have better definition.

2 questions about exercise bikes?

ice_queen9

I am thinking about getting one soon, but I have a couple of questions first. First of all, I thought I remembered hearing that exercise bikes (and treadmills as well) didn't work well because you weren't actually going anywhere, is there any truth to that? And second question, does it really matter if it's a cheap one or an expensive one? I don't have much money, but if it works, I want one.

Answer
My doctor told me that stationary bikes are very good. It may be a little boring because you aren't going anywhere. Cheap ones work just as well as expensive ones. Try to get one with a good seat or at least a seat that can be replaced with a regular bike seat. Sitting on a bad seat for 30 minutes at a time can be painful.

A couplde questions about exercise bikes?

Richard G

First do u include warms up as part of workout time? I haven't but I am not sure because I do warm up of 5min before and cool down 5min after. I ride for 30 minutes using the intervals training program so a combined 40 min. all together. The bike is $300us so it aint the best, I was wondering about how good it is because in a 11 mile ride it claims I have burned over 500 cal, that isn't correct right?

Answer
As long as you're consistent about what you count or don't count, it really doesn't matter. YOU know what you did and how hard you were working,

If you're actually doing the equivalent of 11 miles in 30 minutes, that ain't shabby at all, but the 500 calories is probably a little on the optimistic side, as you suspect.

It sounds like weight loss is your primary objective.

Realistically, measuring calories burned accurately is next to impossible. You're much better off focusing on something else, like average speed, or miles travelled, or just enjoying the ride. Thinking calories too much of the time keeps your mind on food. Its difficult to stay motivated when your program and scorekeeping are based on constantly thinking about your enemy.

Look for positive reinforcement tied to your workouts. Riding to a friends house. Running to the marsh to see the sunrise. Have a goal, like getting in shape for 100 mile charity ride, or doing your first triathlon. You get the idea.

As for equipment, the bulk of my triathlon bike training is done on a beat up MTB I bought for $350 on closeout several years ago. You don't need fancy and expensive to get a good workout. My indoor trainer is an even more beat up mountain bike (no longer roadworthy) on Performance's cheapest trainer.

The expensive tri-bike feels like a rocket ship come race day.

Will an exercise bike help me?

LASportsFa

I have my new years resolution. Six pack by summer or just dont be overweight. I'm 5"6, 169, 17yrs old ( was 160 but just came back from vacation)
I play hockey, I have little fat on my legs, but my stomach is a bit flabby along with my arms and chest, I hate running, I want to use my Xmas money to buy an exercise bike because I know I will do it pretty much 24/7, after hw is done I have from 6-9 to do anything, mostly watching TV or texting, I figure I can do that while riding?

Answer
Sure. Better still, it'll cost less than you think. Real cyclists use a regular bike on a trainer like that shown below. They make fancy, expensive one's with computer interfaces, but even the basic cheap ones are plenty sturdy and effective. Besides the trainer, all you need is any old bike with a slick rear tire to drive the roller. I've used one similar to the one shown for years, training for triathlon.

Losing weight exercise?

Harry

ok so i do 3 mins jumping rope 3 mins squat and 3 mins 5 kg weight each hand lifting!i do this once or twice a day and want to get rid of around 10-15 kg!i also drink a lot of water and eat health and jung food only once or twice a week.i started this today i am 15 years old.will i lose wight fast?
how long will it take me to lose that amount of kg?Thank you :)

Answer
I have been experienced good room amenities and aerobic cardio exercise. Start with a small goal of 20 minutes, 3 times per week if youâre exercising at all currently.
Start by walking. Walking around your neighborhood costs nothing and is a great way to start moving. You can also try other low-impact exercises like swimming, riding a bike or slow running.
Eat food from home. Sure, going out for a power lunch helps you to see and be seen, but researchers find that people who eat fewer meals from restaurants tend to lose more weight.
Eat vegetables for nutrition and to help you fill up more quickly. When you make your lunch or dinner plate contain at least 50 percent vegetables, you can have other richer dishes on your plate in smaller portions.

Exercise Tips (Women)?

To specify, I am a young muslim woman and finding ways to keep in shape is rather hard. i am about 15 pounds overweight compared to my age group and while that isn't too bad it can easily go out of control.
I can't exactly run outside or go to the gym easily so I was wondering if anyone has good tips or ideas to keep in shape.

How long do I have to ride an exercise bike for, to get the equivalent of running 2.5 km?

valHoS

I have a Recumbent bike and the resistance is on medium.
Please give a Time and not a distance

Answer
The best indicator of you bodies exertion is your heart rate. It doesn't matter what kind of exercise you do if you elevate your heart rate to the same level for the same amount of time you will achieve an equivalent work out.

The best heart rate to exercise at is around 70% of your maximum heart rate. If you do not have a heart rate monitor this is the pace where it is difficult to hold a conversation but you are not gasping. This is the best exercise zone to burn fat and work your heart.

The longer you can stay in this zone the better.I

If it takes you say 10 minutes to run 2.5 km at this heart rate 10 minute on the bike at the SAME heart rate would be about equal. I would recommend trying to push it out to at least half an hour.

Is bike riding an effective exercise for weight loss?

ME!!

Thats my main form of exercise, as well as walking.

Answer
It depends on how far your ride it, what your load is (up hill, your weight, etc), and other factors. However, cycling will burn calories as will any exercise if your diet allows it. If you enjoy biking, do it and you'll burn calories while having fun. However, don't try to control your fat with exercise. Control fat with diet. Plan your workouts around fitness goals such as excellence in a sport or occupation, strength, endurance, flexibility, systemic fitness, general health and well being, body sculpting, body awareness, coordination, poise and comportment, balance, body composition, mental acuity, educational experience, etc. It doesn't matter what exercises you do, they will all burn fat if your diet allows it. However, it does matter if you have goals. Working out is too difficult to do without success to inspire you to continue. And, without goals there is no way to measure success. Check out these fitness facts.

⢠If you consume fewer calories than you burn, you have to lose fat eventually. There are no exceptions to this fact.

⢠There are only two nonsurgical things you can do to sculpt your body and they are (1) add or lose fat and (2) add or lose muscle. Muscle can only be lost naturally through atrophy.

⢠A pound of fat will yield about 3500 calories (Kcal) of energy.

⢠An average person must run or walk about 5 miles (8 km) every day to burn one pound of fat per week BUT THEIR DIET MUST ALLOW IT.

⢠An average person must run or walk about 350 miles (563 km) to burn 10 pounds BUT THEIR DIET MUST ALLOW IT. If they walk 350 miles (13.4 marathons) at 3mph it will take them 117 hours or about three full 40 hour work weeks to burn 10 pounds of fat.

⢠If an average person consumes 500 calories per day less than they burn, they will lose about a pound a week with no extra time or physical effort required.

â¢Running does not burn any more fat than walking as long as the distance remains the same.

⢠It does not matter if a person runs or walks a given distanceâ¦they will burn the same number of calories. Calories are energy and energy expenditure is not time dependent. How fast a person runs has nothing to do with how many calories they burn. Only the distance determines the calories burned.

⢠There is no exercise which will remove fat from a particular place on the body. Your body (genetics) determines where you lose fat, not you nor your diet nor your exercise. Spot fat removal by diet or exercise is a myth which is why people spend so much money on liposuction.

⢠It is not necessary to do "cardio" to burn fat. Cardio is aerobic exercise while maintaining a heart rate of 80% of max or more which is used to maintain cardio-vascular fitness. You can burn fat in your sleep.

⢠Most of the calories you consume will be spent just keeping your body temperature at 98.6F.

⢠It doesnât matter how hard or how long you exercise, you will not lose any fat if you eat too much. You can always eat more calories than you can burn. When it comes to burning fat, diet always trumps exercise.

⢠There are no supplements which will make your body burn fat. Only you can do that with diet control.

⢠An average natural bodybuilder who is just starting to train may gain as much as 4-8 ounces of muscle in a month. An average dieter who is burning fat will lose about a pound a week. Anyone can gain a pound in a few minutes just be drinking a pint of water.

Now, here's how to burn fat. Forget all the fad diets, myths and misinformation, and just plain bad advice you've learned in the past. Here's the only fat loss plan you need and it's approved the US National Institute of Health.

Eat a diet of varied, wholesome, and high quality foods such that your daily caloric intake is about 500 calories less than your daily caloric burn while keeping your macronutrient ratios at about 55/25/20 (%calories from carbs/fats/protein) and not doing anything to defeat the foregoing plan such as taking supplements, drinking alcohol, abusing drugs, using cleanses or emetics, etc. That's it. It's that simple.

Here are the only two websites you need to do that.
1. This site has a wide range of information about foods, fat, diets, and exercise with calculators, diet tips, food facts, etc. ---> http://www.freedieting.com/

2. This website is a great way to track calories, macronutrients, water, and exercise. It also does all the math for you and makes it super easy to look up foods to enter into your online food intake diary. There's a discussion forum where you can exchange info with thousands of other dieters and an app to sync to your cell phone so you can update your intake while on the go. --->http://www.myfitnesspal.com/

Here's my food intake diary as an example ---> http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/diary/clickmaster

Good luck and good health!!

What do you think is going to happen to humans in the future?

purple.

Consider all aspects... Climate (global warming), population increase, crashing economy, increased illnesses (such as Cancer), pollution, war, and crime rate.

I just want to know others opinions.

How can we change? What scares you most? When do you think the worst will start to happen?

Answer
Climate Change(global warming):
First of all, there is no solid evidence if global warming is human induced, so we might not be able to anything about it. Like how our economy works in cycles, the Earth's climate apparently also follows a cycle, just like how we had our last Ice age, there were many before it, each with different lengths in time. Of course, there is no doubt we're doing things to mother Earth that could speed up the process, but to what degree is still a big and unsolved question. Fighting climate change is a global effort- a small hole on the bottom of a water bottle will discharge all of its content, we cannot have some nations doing it and others destroying it.What scares me the most is that I probably won't live to see Ice Age, just kidding. I am not really scared of global warming myself, I am scared for our future generations that will be dealing with it. I'm not an expert in climatology(Is that even a word?) It isn't completely hopeless, now that humans can control the climate through advance technology.

Population Increase:
If you're in a developed nation, I don't think there is need for change, as there is a trend in having less kids, and educated people generally know not to have too many kids, because they understand the burden behind it. We are already seeing some countries across Europe with declining population. I don't think we need a one-child policy all over the world, not because it's kinda anti-democracy, but because education is a power tool. If you're in a third world nation, without adequate sanitary condition and health care, then yes, what we can do is providing better education overall. I enjoy hiking and biking, and those two things, to me, are more enjoyable in areas where there are less people, not commercialized, and in a natural environment. A huge population could bring more pollution, and less all natural environment. I'm scared one day the favorite mountain I loved to climb is developed into a community with many houses on top of it. It's already bad enough in places like China and India, and also in parts of Latin America countries, I cannot imagine any worse than that. But I think human's roach-like survivability will somehow deal with the issue, like how Japan dealt with theirs.

Crashing Economy:
Unfortunately, there is no simple solution in solving a crashing economy, and what we can do to change it also depends on many factors. My suggestion is, live frugal, plan for retirement, get into saving habits, and don't be wasteful. Anyone would be scared to get laid off, especially when you have a loan to pay. For me, I'm scared I can't get a job when I get out of grad school. Due to my lack of knowledge on the economy, I have no proof that my gut feeling this wave of economic crisis is far from over, although some experts are already standing out to say there will be a second wave of financial crisis. We shall see how 2009 fares.

Increased Illnesses(Cancer):
Besides living a healthier lifestyle- eat regularly and normally, exercise, don't smoke and do drugs, sleep well, be happy, and etc, there is really nothing we can do except at the mercy of the businesses that provide us with safe and harmless products.
What scares you most? I'm a optimistic person, so I'm not really scared of (the usual)deadly illnesses such as cancer, it's a price we pay for being so dependent on technology. I can't say I'm not scared of death, I mean, who wouldn't? Modern medical practices are getting more advanced by the day, perhaps one day we really can develop a cure for cancer, as we have in the past for other deadly diseases. Crosses fingers*

Pollution
This is partly an oxymoron question, since "we" bring pollution no matter how we change. The real question is: how do we minimize pollution? Well, I'm sure you've heard of environmentally friendly cars and have your own recycling program in your community, we can utilize environmentally friendly products and participate in environmentally healthy activities. I will be scared when water becomes the new currency of gold, and I have to buy air from Walmart. Short answer, when everything is polluted and unusable. We're far from the worst when most of earthlings don't have the tools or technology or the education to be environmentally conscious.

War:
Be reasonable individuals, use logic not fists to solve matters. I'm also scared, and angry, of government officials who decide when we go to war with our tax money. I hope there will never ever be a third world war, amen.

Crime Rate:
Don't participate in crime, and don't encourage others to do it...duh!
I'm scared I can't walk down the street in the afternoon to buy a soda pop because I'd get mugged in daylight. With adequate policing, I think petty crime is not going to be a problem. Studies have shown education also brings down crime rate. If the wealth gap continues to grow in disproportionate size, then I think we have yet to see the worst- the poor versus th

Could i have an eating disorder?

Q. im 15, 5'7 and im 111 lbs. just 4 months ago i was 127 lbs. iv been starving myself and making myself puke up my dinners. Its like there is a voice in the back of my head telling me im fat all the time and i can escape it. I exercise quite alot, today i did 18 miles on my bike, and burnt 204 calories on the treadmill. Could this possibly be an eating disorder? my friends think i have a problem but even if i do i dont want to get help coz i need to loose weight coz im fat. Even though my bmi is lower than my friends i feel 10x fatter all the time... please tell me what you think!

Answer
According to your BMI you are anorexic with bulimic tendencies. Get help sooner than later. I know it seems like you want it and its the only thing that matters in life... but you will end up losing everything and everyone dear to you.

I couldn't go out with friends anymore to avoid any food situations... I got very sick and I'm still paying the price now with all kind of internal damages. I lost a lot of hair, and have screwed up my digestive system. No one thought I looked good .. not even myself because I was never satisfied... trust me.. once you start its never enough.

As soon as you get the strength tell someone and let them help you. It easier now than later as I still feel guilty eating and can't look at myself sometimes... but at least I have my life back.

What finally did the trick for me was when I came to India and I saw in one town there was a young boy who was purposefully being starved by his family to collect funds. I saw him sitting outside a temple... and I just saw his bones, all of them ... how badly i had wanted those bones... and here he was suffering and on the verge of death wanting nothing more than a bite to eat.... I couldn't believe that I had made this the most important thing in my life. One day i was going to die and that is all i had wanted out of life? to be skinny and ugly?

I felt so shallow and disgusted with myself... I got help. I hope you find your strength one day too.

A good healthy food and exercise plan for a 14 year old?

Boo

I'm 14 years old and not really trying to lose weight (i weigh 107 and im about 5'1). I'm really just trying to lose a few inches off my stomach, and tone my arms and legs. I admit i do eat a lot of junk, so that's why im looking for good healthy food plan so that i can cut down on junk. I know i have to drink 8-10 cups of water a day (i dont but need to start). I'm not sure if i need to say anything else. lol

help please =]
<3
for the healthy foods, it would help if you could give me some food examples.

thx!

Answer
First off I am not a dietician or anyway involved as a personal trainer etc. ......But what i've noticed since I was your age not to many years back........

Cut down/Drink very little Pop/Soda carbonated drinks.......a lot of carbohydrates...which pop really if you drink enough can make you gain quite a bit of weight. Another thing you will notice by not drinking much of pop is your complexion will clear up MAJORLY. And brushing isn't so bad becuase pop really stains your teath...it really does.

Cardiovascular....When I was in elementry school I NEVER EVER thought twice about running somewhere in a burst was always a good runner or being short on energy that way. Got to highschool no more recess lack of excercise...i noticed when i had to run far distance to catch the bus when late shortness of breath....IF you can do 10-20 min on an excercise bike a day in a week you'll notice a big difference......leg muscles.....lack of shortness of breath when running...but keep at it....just a little bit every day or every other day ...but weekly keep at it. GREAT WAY to keep in shape cheaply ...excercise bike.

Stretching.......I ALWAYS HATED STRETCHING.....they always preached stretching in cross country...i hardly bothered but i now realize.....stretching is really good...warms ur muscles up before big excercise so you dont hurt yourself nothing works right when its cold ...car engine...ever notice when you come in from a real cold day your hands dont quite have the coordination they normally would if at room temp. when your muscles are pushed hard when they havent had movement and strechng you could tear or strain /pull something.and movement or yoga like movements help and muscle move in places that you wouldnt normally target....THIS IS REALLY BIG.....try in the morning before you have a shower for like 10 min make a little routine....legs up and down....arms back and forth ...NECK..back and forth target that area as you get older you skin and what not will start to lose elasticity so stretching really helps in those areas that arent targeted that often.......its a pain....but if you can do a little 5-10 in the morning and at night ......and keep at it month after month you will notice a difference.....just standing and moving ur legs & knees inwards day after day helps tone abs....just keep it small and work day after day ....if you can do them....try 1 or 2 pushups ****after you have stretched! ....and everyone hates them .....but do them day after day a couple at a time then in a week or so they become easier to do....but a key when excercising is giving your muscles down time to recover and relax....they cant always be on the go....but if you want to try push ups to get a little arm tone....they dont necc. have to be from the ground...lean outward from a wall on a angle and try ....but take it slow till you feel a difference and they come easier. Here is something to remember as you get older they say after 25 every year you start to lose a little muscle....clearly more so when you are older you lose more than when your 27...but keeping a excercise as a constant routine no matter how little helps because as you get older its harder to regain that muscle or stay firm if you were totally out of shape...so if your pretty good to begin with the workload isnt so bad if you do a little here little there.

Instead of going to fastfood all the time....or eating treats that are packaged....make yourself.....real food....take your meats cheese...sandwhiches....milk for your bones is important....just treat yourself with maybe 1 or 2 small treats a day and resist the junk food ....i know its hard but its 100% doable....just try not to laps.

Drinkng lots of water instead of pop as you are doing is really good.....i basically all but quit drinking pop this year ( which i love sooo much) but i only have it when i go out with friend at night to a restaurant or somewhere like that so once a week a can maybe. So i started drinking water more to where I love water more than I ever did....and I feel healthier not drinking so much pop.

Keeping your carbs at a resonable level is important and having a good variety of vegtables , and all that stuff.

Biggest thing....lay of junk food, start with small excercise & stretching...increase slowly till it becomes easier...to where you enjoy your routine.....what will happen is if you can keep at your routine and not laps for 4 months then try to hop back on the train it will be harder ...where if you keep at it you will feel healthier and it wont seem so bad bit by bit....dont starve youself and still snack and enjoy things but keep it to a normal level.

That's what I've realized that makes me feel healthier just overall and I notice a big difference....you might as well start when your young and keep to where you enjoy living healthy but not a excercize freak or depriving yourself of the things you enjoy becuase thats no way to live. Will Power to achieve what you want goes a long way.I hope that helps .

I'm 14 years old and I hate my butt, does anyone know any good butt exercises.?

I want to be a size 3 and I'm a size 7. Please, anything that can help.

Answer
The right cardio exercise and weight training activities (like squats
and deadlifts) can make a difference in your backside and help you get
those buns of steel. Find out the best cardio and strength training
exercises for strengthening and firming up your rear.
1. Squats.
Squats are one of the best exercises you can do for your hips, butt
and thighs. Stand with feet hip-width apart and squat, keeping back
straight, abs in and knees behind your toes. Let your butt lightly
touch chair and squeeze butt to stand up. Repeat for 2-3 sets of 8-12
reps and add weights for more intensity.
2. Lunges. Stand in a split
stance, with feet about 3 feet apart. You want both knees to be at
about 90-degree angles at the bottom of the movement, so adjust
accordingly. Hold weights in each hand (or place a barbell behind the
neck) for added intensity. Bend the knees and lower the back knee
toward the floor, keeping the front heel down and the knee directly
over the centre of the foot. Keep the torso straight and abs in as you
push through the front heel and back to starting position. Don't lock
the knees at the top of the movement. Perform 1 to 3 sets of 10 to 16
reps according to your fitness level and goals.
3. Step Ups. For step
ups, you simply place one foot on a step or platform and push through
the heel onto the step. This is an excellent exercise for the glutes.
4. Hip Extensions. Lie on the floor with feet propped on the ball,
legs straight. Keeping abs tight, slowly lift your hips off the floor
(squeezing the buttocks) until body is in a straight line. Hold for a
few seconds and lower, repeating 10 to 15 times.
5. One-Legged Deadlifts. You should skip this exercise if you
have any back problems. To do this move, take the left leg back just a bit, lightly
resting on the toe. With the weights in front of the thighs, tip from
the hips and lower the weights as low as your flexibility allows. Keep
your back flat or with a natural arch and make sure you keep the abs
contracted to protect the back. Squeeze the glutes of the working leg
to raise back up. Do 2-3 sets of 8-12 reps.
6. Hiking. Now the
exercises listed above aren't the only strength moves for the glutes,
but we often forget that there are cardio activities that will also
engage the backside. Hiking is one of those activities and it also
burns tons of calories. Also, walking up an incline automatically gets
your glutes more involved and, if you're wearing a backpack, you're
really getting a workout. A 140-lb person burns about 390 calories in
about an hour!
7. Biking. Riding a bike is great for your heart and it
also targets almost every muscle in your hips, thighs and butt. On a
stationary bike, alternate 3 minutes at 70-80 RPM with 2 minutes at
100-110 RPM for a calorie-blasting 30 minute workout. You can also try
Spinning at the gym or riding outside. Gear up to really work your
glutes! A 140-lb person burns 335 calories in 45 minutes.
8. Running. Running, like walking, is accessible, easy to learn, reduces stress,
helps in weight loss, and it makes you feel good. Plus, it really
works your butt, especially when you add a few hills to your regular
running route. A 140-lb person burns 475 calories during a 45 minute
jog.
9. Kickboxing. Kickboxing was a hot item back in the day, but it's
still a great workout. Controlled kicks work your hips, thighs and
butt while complex combinations that include punches will target your
abs to make them stronger. A 140-lb woman will burn up to 500 calories
with 45 minutes of kickboxing.
10. Walking. Walking is easy: you can do
it anywhere, anytime with no special equipment. There's no learning
curve and it's something you can incorporate all day long. If you walk
up hills, you can really target your glutes and, if you pick up the
intensity, you'll burn some of that extra flab off your buns! A 140-lb
person burns about 300 calories an hour during a brisk walk.

what exactly will an exercise bike do for you?

guitarboy

now by this i mean like..is it a type of cardio? what will it improve..what is the recommended amount of time to be on one? all abit vague i know..but answers through experience as apposed to a web-site.

Answer
exercise bikes are a great low impact exercise to take the place of a cardio session. It works great for toning your legs while burning calories at the same time. The muscle that benefits most from it is your heart. Most doctors and fitness specialists recommend three 30 minute sessions of cardio a week, but find what works best for you.

What benefits do my body get from an exercise bike?

BabyDaddy-

Does it work the abs? Define the legs? Any benefits you can think of. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Exercise bikes help build lean muscle in the legs, thighs, and butt. They are also cardio so they get your heart pumping. A good thing about building lean muscle in the legs is that there are some really large muscles there and they will burn more calories.

Exercise bikes are great, but don't forget strength training for your upper body and core muscles (abs, back). You want to be healthy all around.

What's the best brand of treadmills/exercise bikes?

debsters b

As in quality and price?

Answer
for a spinner, I have had some great workouts on a johnny G spinner.

trainers- if you have a bike and want to strap it to a trainer, I reccommend a cycleops fluid trainer.

for a gym-like excercise bike, try testing out a lifecycle bike, they aren't bad, but you don't get much in road simulation.

good luck.

What brand Exercise Bike is Best? Need Some Advice.?

Sarah

I am going to buy an exercise bike, I was wondering what Brand is better, Schwinn or ProForm?
I am using it just for Cardio, I'm not a biker so I'm not looking for something that a heavy biker would use. I'll prob use it for 5-10 miles a day.
Thanks.

Answer
The best exercise bike is the one you ACTUALLY USE.
ANY brand will do as long as you use it regularly and faithfully.
Good luck and best wishes.

Runners knee/Rehab I am very sad..?

fmaaabdull

Running makes me who I am.. Running is me.. It is my life.. running 3 years now and competing in marathons.. LIfe has been great thank God.. past week I got a knee pain.. and after several x-rays and mri I was with a physical therapist last night and she said I cannot run for 1 month or more... (Imagine what I felt I am so sad crying even now..) I am learning to cope up with this.. I worked so hard to be able to compete in a marathon next month but its all gone.. - I have knee pain walking down stairs and pain is lateral/outside of left knee.. she said it is from stress/over-use which also caused minimal fluid and its the cause of pain and said i will go thrice a week therapy sessions for a month.. so i mean can I do some bike or what else to keep fit? I did go to the gym but i want to do something to sweat.. and to keep my endurance.. my drive is making me crazy i dont know how to deal with this..

Answer
You can use a bike but since you are addicted to running try this. Deep water running. This is done in a pool with the use of a special floatation device to hold the body in an upright position. You can run and it will be great exercise as the water acts as a great resistance factor. There is no ground force reaction to bother the knee.

Jumpers Knee Seems Worse After Treatment?

Alex

So I've had jumpers knee now for about 3 months and started icing it in the last month. I got it from doing parkour without considering my knees enough. I have it in my left a little and my right quite a bit more (I was biking a while ago and the chain came off and I hit my right knee into the bars quite hard which made it feel worse). In the last week or two I have been resting more and icing more (20-30 minutes each time) and since I have been icing it and resting it more it almost feels worse. I'm not sure if this is normal but it is a little concerning. It may not be getting any better because for school I have to carry around a heavy bag all day but the Christmas holidays are in 4 weeks. Do you know why it is getting worse and is there anything else I can do to help it (e.g. vitamins, stretches or exercises)?

Thanks guys

Answer
Continue to ice for 10-15 minutes 3x a day. Rest it as much as possible. Depending on your pain, if not too severe, start doing some minor rehab. Some very mild body weight squats, may be ok. Try laying on your back, lifting one leg of the ground a few inches. Keep your leg straight, this is key, and the muscles contracted. Hold for 2-3 seconds, then lower. Do 10-15x 2-3x a day. More advanced rehab may include one leg balance and elastic tubing resistance for strengthening.
Remember to try to follow the steps of Pain, Swelling, Mobility, Strength, and Function. Meaning don't go on to the next step unless all previous steps are good. On second thought, since you've had for 3 months, I would recommend going to get it looked at, as you may have more serious problems, most likely in your ligaments or cartilage.

riding my stationary bike for 120 minutes a day?

Q. i will be eating between 1200-1300 calories a day.
i plan to ride an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon
i weigh 190 and im 5'3
i drink around 90 fl.oz of water a day
is this a good start to loosing weight?
im gonna do this for 2 months 3 days a week(monday, wenesday, thursday)
then on tuesday, saturday and friday i will only do a half hour.
How much is possible to loose in this 2 months if i follow this?
ooh yeah im doin it at 12-15mph.

Answer
Have you consulted with your doctor? 1200-1300 Calories per day is a severely restricted diet. I'm sure the stationary bike will help, but there's no telling how much work you're actually doing, since stationary bikes kind of read whatever they want to. New studies seem to validate my method, and note that riding on an empty stomach will help you burn more fat than if you eat first. The trick is to ride at an easy pace so you don't deplete your blood sugar and make yourself so ravenous that you go off your planned diet. So while exercise helps, overdoing it can derail you in a hurry.

For best weight-loss results, it's better to lose slowly and modify your eating habits to meet your goals. For instance, if you want to weigh 125 pounds, only eat enough to support a 125-pound person and realize that it's going to be a lifetime commitment.

My knees ache for a few days after riding stationary bike for 30 minutes?

Jmd

Is this reason for me to stop?

Answer
First, make sure that the bike is correctly adjusted for you. You didn't say if you are in a spinning class at a gym or if you are riding the stationary bike by yourself. If you are in a gym, get one of the instructors to help you. If you are by yourself, adjust the seat so that your leg has just a slight bend at the knee when the pedal is at the bottom of the stroke. Your hips should not rock when you pedal. The ball of your foot should be on top of the pedal's shaft.

Another reason for knee pain is riding too slowly with too much tension. Reduce the tension until you can comfortably spin at about 85-90 rpm. Keep it at that level for a while. If your stationary bike doesn't have an RPM indicator, use a watch and count the number of times a given pedal hits the bottom of the stroke. I do this for 30 seconds and then multiply by 2.

If these two things don't make the problem go away, then see your doctor.
